How hot and humid is Chennai for a dog?
Chennai never gets a cool season. IMD's 1991 to 2020 normals for Nungambakkam put the mean daily maximum at 29.4C in December, the coolest month, and 37.3C in May.
The mean maximum stays at 35C or above in 3 months, May to July. Nights stay warm too: the mean minimum is 26C or more from April to August, so a dog gets little cool air after dark.
Meenambakkam, near the airport, runs hotter. Its May mean maximum is 38.3C, a degree above Nungambakkam.

Humidity matters as much as heat. A dog cools itself by panting, which works poorly in wet air. ERA5 reanalysis data puts Chennai's average relative humidity at 75.5% for 1991 to 2020, peaking at 82% in November.

A muggy day here means a daily mean dew point of 24C or more, a level most people feel as oppressive. Chennai averaged 156.3 such days a year from 1991 to 2020, against 78.9 in Delhi and none in Bengaluru.
Is Chennai getting more humid?
Yes, on this measure. Chennai logged 246 muggy days in 2024, the most in the 35 years of ERA5 data we checked, and 196 in 2025.
The years 1991 to 2000 averaged 141.9 muggy days a year. The ten years from 2016 to 2025 averaged 215.9, about 52% more.
2026 is running higher still. January to September 2026 had 169 muggy days, against 153 in the same months of 2025 and a 1991 to 2020 average of 126.1.

For a dog owner, a muggy day is a day when panting does less. Short coats help, which is why the sighthounds and the Pariah Dog sit at the top of our table.
When is it too hot to walk a dog in Chennai?
Avoid the hours around 2.30 pm for most of the year. At the airport weather station, the 2.30 pm heat index reached 39.4C (103F) or more on 153.1 days a year on average from 2016 to 2024.
The US National Weather Service calls that band of heat index Danger for people. The yearly count ranged from 137 days in 2016 to 172 in 2017.
May is the worst month, with 29 such afternoons on average, followed by April at 26.1 and June at 25.7. November to February are almost free of them.

Formal heatwaves are rare here. IMD counted 27 heatwave days in the Tamil Nadu subdivision across 2015 to 2025, with 13 in 2024 and none in 2025. Chennai's risk is the steady humid heat that never trips a heatwave alert, so the heatwave report understates it.
When does the monsoon hit dogs in Chennai?
Chennai's wet season comes late. IMD normals show 62% of Nungambakkam's 1,377 mm of yearly rain falls in October, November and December, during the northeast monsoon.
November is the wettest month, at 373.6 mm over 11.3 rainy days. October brings 300.3 mm and the most thunder, with 7.0 thunder days on average.

Methodology and limitations
Ranking: dogeats.in editorial data compiled from our 58 breed guides, October 2026. Each guide rates a breed from 1 to 5 on heat, monsoon, flat living, coping without AC, being left alone and beginner friendliness. For Chennai we weighted heat 3, coping without AC 3, monsoon 2, flat living 2 and beginner friendliness 1, then scaled the weighted mean to 100.
We chose the weights from Chennai's data. Hot months and warm nights drive the heat and AC weights, the northeast monsoon drives the monsoon weight, and flat living reflects an apartment city. A guide that names Chennai as a good city adds 10 points, or 5 if it attaches a condition such as a short clip. A guide that names Chennai as hard takes away 15. Scores are capped at 0 and 100. The same method, with each city's own weights, runs across our city reports.
Climate: IMD 1991 to 2020 climatological tables for Chennai (Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam), Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Bengaluru. Humidity and muggy days come from ERA5 reanalysis daily data for each city's grid cell, downloaded through Open-Meteo. A muggy day has a daily mean dew point of 24C or more.
Afternoon heat: we took NOAA Integrated Surface Database hourly reports for Chennai airport (WMO 43279) from 2016 to August 2025. From the 09:00 UTC (2.30 pm IST) temperature and dew point we computed the heat index with the US National Weather Service formula. Heatwave days come from IMD data tabled in Parliament. Air quality days were counted from CPCB daily AQI bulletins to 14 October 2026.
