Which Indian city is best for keeping a dog?

Bengaluru, by our count. Of 58 breed guides, 49 name it as a good city and only 2 name it as hard. Pune is almost level, good for 46 breeds and hard for 2.

Both have mild winters and summers that are hot but drier than the coast. Our Labrador guide calls Bengaluru mild year-round and the easiest large city for the breed.

The two breeds that find even Bengaluru and Pune hard are the Saint Bernard and the Bernese Mountain Dog. Our guides call both cities better than most, but still warm for those coats.

Net city score: breeds naming the place as good minus breeds naming it as hard

Bengaluru and Pune are good cities for 49 and 46 breeds. Chennai and Mumbai are hard cities for 38 and 34.

A good-city mention is not always unconditional. 21 of Bengaluru's mentions add a condition, such as air conditioning for the Pug and French Bulldog or an active owner for the Border Collie.

Humid heat makes Chennai and Mumbai the hardest

Chennai is the hardest. 38 of our 58 breed guides (66%) name it as a hard city. Mumbai follows at 34 and Kochi and Kerala at 28.

The reason is heat and humidity together. Humid air makes panting less effective, and a damp undercoat breeds skin infection. The Golden Retriever guide calls Chennai the hardest major Indian city for that coat.

IMD normals show why there is no break. Chennai's mean daily maximum is 29.7C even in January, against 20.1C in Delhi. Its yearly average maximum is 33.4C.

Chennai still suits 14 breeds. Five are Indian breeds, including the Chippiparai and Rajapalayam, which our guides call entirely comfortable there. The imported short-coated breeds that cope are the Rhodesian Ridgeback, Doberman, Jack Russell Terrier, Miniature Pinscher and Chihuahua.

No guide names Ahmedabad as a good city, and 9 name it as hard. Its notes point to dry summer heat rather than humidity.

Is Delhi a good city for dogs?

Delhi is a winter city for most breeds. Our guides name it as good for 38 breeds, but 31 of those come with a condition such as "in winter" or "with strict summer management".

Only 7 breeds are called good in Delhi without a condition. They are Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rampur Greyhound, Chihuahua, Indian Spitz, Poodle, Yorkshire Terrier and Maltese.

IMD normals for Safdarjung show the swing. The mean daily maximum is 20.1C in January and 39.9C in May.

Chandigarh shows the same pattern more sharply. All 10 of its good-city mentions come with a winter or summer condition.

Short-coated breeds face the opposite problem. North Indian winters are hard for 10 breeds in our guides, mostly lean sighthounds and toy dogs that need a jacket.

Top picks for each city

The table lists the main cities and regions named in our guides, with our top picks for each. Picks are breeds our guides name as good there without a condition. Where there are fewer than four, we add breeds our guides say suit every city, unless they name that place as hard.

Most city owners are families in flats, so picks are ordered by our beginner-friendly and flat scores added together. Ties go to the better climate score: heat plus no-AC, plus monsoon for humid cities.

  • Pune: Poodle, Chihuahua, Maltese, Yorkshire Terrier and German Spitz.
  • Kolkata: no guide names it as good. Our picks are all-city breeds: Indian Spitz, Poodle, Indian Pariah Dog, Yorkshire Terrier and Miniature Pinscher.

Kolkata and Ahmedabad have no good-city mentions in any guide, so their picks come only from the all-city breeds. Kolkata is named as hard for four breeds, all double-coated, because of its humid heat.

Huskies and Saint Bernards belong in the hills

Only the hills suit them, by our guides' account. Hill stations are named as good for 35 breeds and the North East for 15. Ladakh is named for 6.

The Siberian Husky guide calls hill stations the only suitable Indian locations, with Bengaluru or Pune workable only with AC and a very committed owner. The Saint Bernard, Bernese Mountain Dog, Alaskan Malamute and Tibetan Mastiff guides name no plains city as good at all.

Hill stations are not ideal for every dog. Our guides name them as hard for the Chihuahua and the Mudhol Hound, both short-coated dogs that feel the cold.

Breeds that suit almost any city

8 breed guides say the breed suits most or every Indian city: Beagle, Indian Pariah Dog, Dachshund, Indian Spitz, Poodle, Yorkshire Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier and Miniature Pinscher.

The Indian Pariah Dog guide is the strongest, naming every city from Leh to Kanyakumari. It lists no city as climatically hard. The Indian Spitz guide says suiting every city is the point of the breed.

The others carry small caveats. The Poodle needs a short clip and a decent groomer, the Yorkshire Terrier a short clip, and the Beagle and Dachshund struggle in Chennai's peak summer.

The kind of home counts as much as the city

Often the home matters more. 206 of the 463 city lines in our guides (44%) name no place at all. They describe a kind of home instead.

Flats and high-rises come up most, then society rules and access to cooling. Several guides say outright that reliable AC matters more than the city for flat-faced breeds.

How we counted cities across 58 breed guides

Each breed guide lists four places or settings where the breed does well and four where it struggles. The Indian Pariah Dog guide lists three hard settings, so there are 463 lines across 58 guides.

We matched every line against a list of city and region names, then checked all of them by hand. Several names were merged:

  • Bengaluru and Bangalore count as Bengaluru.
  • Kochi, coastal Kerala and Kerala count as one place, "Kochi and Kerala".
  • Shimla, Manali, Dehradun, Mussoorie, Nainital, Dalhousie, Darjeeling, Gangtok, Sikkim, Ooty, Himachal, Uttarakhand and "hill stations" count as hill stations.
  • Leh and Ladakh count as Ladakh. Madurai, Coimbatore, Trichy, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi count as southern Tamil Nadu.
  • Comparisons were removed before counting. "Better than Chennai" in a Saint Bernard line does not count against Chennai.
  • A breed counts once per place, even if two lines name it.

A good-city line counts as conditional when it says "in winter", "with AC", "with a short clip", "with a yard" or similar. Lines such as "north Indian cities" that name no city were not credited to Delhi.

Frequently asked questions

Which Indian city is best for dogs?

Bengaluru, on our count. 49 of 58 breed guides name it as a good city and only 2 as hard. Pune is close behind at 46 good and 2 hard. Both have mild winters and drier heat than the coast.

Which dog breed is best for Chennai?

Our guides name Indian breeds such as the Indian Pariah Dog, Indian Spitz, Chippiparai, Rajapalayam and Kanni as good for Chennai. Short-coated imports that cope are the Rhodesian Ridgeback, Doberman, Jack Russell Terrier, Miniature Pinscher and Chihuahua. Avoid double-coated and flat-faced breeds.

Which dog is best for Mumbai?

The Indian Pariah Dog, Indian Spitz, Doberman, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Chihuahua and Miniature Pinscher are named as good for Mumbai without conditions. Mumbai is named as a hard city for 34 of 58 breeds, mostly because humidity keeps coats and ears damp.

Which dog is best for Delhi?

Delhi suits 38 breeds, but 31 of them only in winter or with strict summer management. Breeds named as good without conditions include the Rampur Greyhound, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Indian Spitz and Poodle. Plan for May and June, when IMD normals put the mean maximum near 40C.

Which dog breed is best for Bengaluru?

Bengaluru is the easiest big city in our data, named as good for 49 of 58 breeds. Heavy-coated breeds such as the Labrador, Golden Retriever and German Shepherd do better here than anywhere on the plains. Only the Saint Bernard and Bernese Mountain Dog guides call it hard.

Can I keep a Husky in Bengaluru or Delhi?

Only with great care. The Siberian Husky guide calls Bengaluru and Pune workable only with AC and an exceptionally committed, athletic owner, and Delhi suitable only in deep winter. Hill stations and Ladakh are the places our guides call suitable.

Which dog breeds suit every Indian city?

8 guides say so: the Indian Pariah Dog, Indian Spitz, Beagle, Dachshund, Poodle, Yorkshire Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier and Miniature Pinscher. Most add small caveats, such as a short clip for the Poodle and Yorkshire Terrier.

Why is Chennai hard for dogs?

It combines heat with humidity all year. IMD normals for 1991 to 2020 put Chennai's mean daily maximum at 29.7C in January and 37.3C in May. Humid air makes panting less effective, which is why 38 of our 58 breed guides name Chennai as hard.

Methodology and limitations

This report counts places named in the good-city and hard-city lists of the 58 breed guides on dogeats.in. Each list holds four lines per breed, which gives 463 lines in total.

Lines were matched to a fixed list of cities and regions with name normalisation, then checked by hand. Comparisons such as "better than Chennai" and phrases such as "from Leh to Kanyakumari" were removed before matching. Each breed counts once per place.

A good-city line is marked conditional if it names a season, AC, cooling, a clip, a yard or summer management. Net score is breeds naming a place as good minus breeds naming it as hard.

Top picks per city use breeds named as good without a condition, topped up with all-city breeds not named hard there. They are ordered by beginner-friendly plus flat score, then by climate score. Climate normals are from India Meteorological Department climatological tables for 1991 to 2020.

Limitations. The lists are dogeats.in editorial judgements, written to help owners, not a survey of where dogs live. Each guide names only four good and four hard settings, so a city that is not named is not necessarily bad, and bigger cities get named more often. Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Goa have few mentions, so their counts are thin. We could verify IMD normals only for Delhi, Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore, so other cities have no climate table here.
