On climate and cost, yes. Across our 58 breed guides, the nine Indian breeds average 3.65 out of 5 across six suitability scores. The 49 foreign breeds average 2.53.
The gap comes mostly from heat. Indian breeds average 4.67 for tolerating Indian heat and 4.67 for coping without AC. Foreign breeds average 2.35 and 2.45.
Foreign breeds lead on one measure, suiting a flat. Most Indian breeds in our guides are sighthounds or guarding dogs bred for open country.

Read the second chart row by row. For heat, 89 percent of Indian breeds score 4 or 5 against 18 percent of foreign breeds. For flats, the pattern flips: 41 percent of foreign breeds score 4 or 5 against 22 percent of Indian breeds.
Indian breeds handle heat far better
Seven of nine Indian breeds score 5 out of 5 for heat, and eight score 4 or 5. Among 49 foreign breeds, only 9 score 4 or 5.
The Bully Kutta, a heavy mastiff type, is the one Indian breed at 3. Among foreign breeds, 29 score 2 or less for heat and 24 score 2 or less for coping without AC.
Short coats, lean bodies and long legs explain most of it. Indian sighthounds and the Pariah Dog shed heat well, while double-coated and flat-faced breeds cannot.

- Foreign breeds scoring 4 or 5 for heat: Beagle, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Dachshund, Chihuahua, Doberman, Poodle, Jack Russell Terrier, Miniature Pinscher, Belgian Malinois.
- Indian breeds scoring 5 for heat: Rampur Greyhound, Kanni, Indian Pariah Dog, Mudhol Hound, Rajapalayam, Kombai, Chippiparai.
Our heat risk ranking scores every breed for Indian summers in detail.
Cheaper to buy and to keep
Indian breeds cost a median Rs 10,000 as pet-quality puppies and Rs 4,500 a month to keep. Foreign breeds cost a median Rs 35,000 and Rs 7,250 a month.
Indian breeds are cheaper to keep even though they weigh more on average, 28.8 kg against 24 kg. Food alone is close, a median Rs 3,000 against Rs 3,750 a month, so the gap lies in other upkeep.

Two Indian breeds pull the averages in opposite directions. The Indian Pariah Dog is usually free, and the Bully Kutta is the dearest Indian breed to keep at Rs 8,000 to 18,000 a month.

Can Indian breeds live in a flat?
Mostly not, by our ratings. Seven of nine Indian breeds score 2 or less for flat living, and the average is 2.11 against 2.94 for foreign breeds.
The exceptions are the Indian Pariah Dog and the Indian Spitz, both rated 4. The five sighthounds, the Rampur Greyhound, Kanni, Mudhol Hound, Rajapalayam and Chippiparai, need space to sprint that a flat cannot give.
That matters for city buyers. A Kombai or Rajapalayam in a 2BHK is a mismatch, however well it handles heat. Our Indian Spitz guide covers the best flat option among Indian breeds.

Foreign breeds that come closest
Five foreign breeds average 3.5 or more across the six scores. The Poodle leads at 3.83, level with four Indian sighthounds.
Three are toy or small breeds: the Dachshund, Chihuahua and Miniature Pinscher. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is an African hound that scores 5 for heat.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Poodle | 40,000 | 7,000 | 4 | 3 | 5 | 4 | 3 | 4 | 3.83 |

| Miniature Pinscher | 21,500 | 4,000 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 2 | 3 | 3.50 |
These breeds still cost more. Their median puppy price, Rs 22,500, is more than twice the Rs 10,000 median for Indian breeds, and the Poodle needs a professional clip every six to eight weeks.
Why Indian breeds are getting more attention
Government backing has helped. In August 2020, the Prime Minister urged the nation, including security forces, to adopt and promote Indian breeds, according to the October 2025 Mann Ki Baat booklet.
The same booklet says the BSF's National Training Centre for Dogs in Gwalior has since put the Rampur Hound and Mudhol Hound into operational use. It describes both as fast, agile and suited to long operations.
Our data explains part of the appeal. Indian breeds cost less, cope better with heat and live slightly longer, at 12.9 years against 12.2.

Methodology and limitations
All breed figures come from the 58 dogeats.in breed guides. Price and cost ranges were compiled by dogeats.in from breeder and marketplace listings for our breed guides, October 2026. We use the midpoint of each range.
Native means a breed or landrace developed in India: Rampur Greyhound, Kanni, Indian Pariah Dog, Indian Spitz, Mudhol Hound, Rajapalayam, Kombai, Chippiparai and Bully Kutta. The Bully Kutta is a subcontinental landrace and the Indian Spitz was developed in India from European spitz stock.
The six scores are dogeats.in editorial ratings from 1 to 5. We report averages with counts, and medians where a single breed could skew the result.
The government context comes from the October 2025 Mann Ki Baat booklet published by the Central Bureau of Communication.
