Dog Breed Price Index India 2026: What 58 Breeds Cost as Puppies, With and Without KCI Papers
The median pet-quality puppy across 58 breeds sold in India costs Rs 30,000, and a KCI-registered puppy costs a median Rs 56,250. Prices run from free for an Indian Pariah Dog to Rs 1.2 lakh for a Samoyed or Dogo Argentino. Nine Indian breeds cost a median Rs 10,000, against Rs 35,000 for 49 foreign breeds.

Key findings
- The median pet-quality puppy costs Rs 30,000 across 58 breeds, and the average is Rs 36,836 because a few costly breeds pull it up.
- 31 of 58 breeds, more than half, have a pet-quality midpoint between Rs 20,000 and Rs 50,000.
- Only 2 breeds, the Samoyed and the Dogo Argentino, have a pet-quality midpoint of Rs 1 lakh or more.
- KCI registration multiplies the price by a median 1.78 times, a typical extra Rs 25,000 for the same breed.
- The Labrador has the steepest paper premium: its KCI midpoint of Rs 45,000 is 2.37 times its pet-quality midpoint of Rs 19,000.
- Nine Indian breeds have a median pet-quality price of Rs 10,000, while 49 foreign breeds sit at Rs 35,000.
- Eight of the 13 breeds under Rs 20,000 are Indian breeds; the other five are the Labrador, Pug, Pomeranian, Lhasa Apso and German Spitz.
- Per kilo of adult weight, toy breeds cost most: a Maltese works out at Rs 12,500 a kg and a Mudhol Hound at Rs 260.
- A typical puppy costs about 4.3 months of that breed's running costs; for a Pembroke Welsh Corgi it is 15.2 months.
How much does a puppy cost in India in 2026?
A pet-quality puppy costs a median Rs 30,000 in India, based on the price ranges in our 58 breed guides. Half the breeds have a midpoint below that figure and half above it.
The average is higher, at Rs 36,836, because a handful of costly breeds drag it up. This index therefore leads with the median, which better reflects what a typical buyer pays.
Pet quality here means a puppy sold without Kennel Club of India papers, or the typical price where papers are uncommon. Ranges are what breeders and marketplaces asked in October 2026, not what every seller will accept.

The top of the table is crowded with breeds that are rare in India, cold-climate dogs, or both. Samoyed, Shiba Inu, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Tibetan Mastiff and Bernese Mountain Dog all reach Rs 1 lakh at the top of their pet-quality range.
Scarcity, import costs and fashion are the usual reasons for the premium. None of those make the dog better suited to an Indian summer, which our Samoyed guide covers in detail.
The cheapest breeds to buy
The Indian Pariah Dog is the cheapest, free to about Rs 3,000, because most are adopted rather than bought. After it come the Mudhol Hound at a Rs 6,500 midpoint and the Chippiparai at Rs 8,500.
Eight of the ten cheapest breeds are Indian. The Pug, at a Rs 14,000 midpoint, and the German Spitz, at Rs 12,500, are the cheapest foreign breeds.

A low price is not a warning sign on its own for Indian breeds. Sighthounds such as the Kanni and Rajapalayam are regional breeds from Tamil Nadu, and their prices reflect local demand rather than metro fashion.
For popular foreign breeds the opposite holds. A Labrador or Pug at the bottom of its range usually comes from a backyard litter with no health screening. Our Labrador guide lists the checks worth paying for.
Under Rs 20,000, over Rs 1 lakh and the band between
31 of the 58 breeds have a pet-quality midpoint between Rs 20,000 and Rs 50,000. That band is where most Indian buyers shop.
13 breeds sit under Rs 20,000, 12 between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh, and just 2 at Rs 1 lakh or above. If you judge by the top of each range instead, 6 breeds reach Rs 1 lakh.

How much more does a KCI-registered puppy cost?
KCI papers raise the price by a median 1.78 times, or about Rs 25,000 for the same breed. The median KCI-registered puppy costs Rs 56,250.
KCI registration records a puppy's parentage with the Kennel Club of India. It does not certify health, and it does not screen hips, eyes or hearts on its own.
We could not compare two breeds. The Indian Pariah Dog has no KCI price because it is a landrace, and the Bully Kutta's KCI figure is unverifiable, so both are left out of this section.
Popular breeds carry the steepest markups. A huge supply of unregistered Labrador, German Shepherd and Rottweiler puppies keeps their pet-quality price low, so papers double it.
The smallest markups, about 1.5 times, belong to Samoyed, Siberian Husky, Shiba Inu and Dalmatian. For rare breeds even unregistered puppies are priced high.
Indian breeds cost far less
The nine Indian breeds in our guides have a median pet-quality price of Rs 10,000, against Rs 35,000 for 49 foreign breeds. The gap at the median is Rs 25,000.
Eight of the nine Indian breeds have a midpoint under Rs 20,000. The exception is the Bully Kutta, priced Rs 15,000 to Rs 50,000, and sellers' claims about its lineage are hard to check.

Size barely moves the price
The median pet-quality price rises from Rs 20,750 for toy breeds to Rs 42,500 for giant breeds. Within each size class, though, prices vary far more than between classes.
Across all 58 breeds, adult weight explains little of the puppy price. The correlation between the two is weak, at 0.23. Rarity and fashion matter more than size.
| Size class | Breeds | Median pet midpoint (Rs) | Median KCI midpoint (Rs) | Median monthly cost (Rs) | Cheapest | Dearest |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toy | 6 | 20,750 | 35,750 | 4,875 | Pomeranian | Maltese |

| Giant | 9 | 42,500 | 73,750 | 13,000 | Rottweiler | Tibetan Mastiff |
Size classes use the midpoint of adult weight. Toy is under 5 kg, small 5 to 12 kg, medium 12 to 25 kg, large 25 to 45 kg and giant 45 kg and above.
Price per kilo of dog
Toy breeds cost the most per kilo. A Maltese puppy works out at Rs 12,500 per kg of adult weight, a Yorkshire Terrier at Rs 11,538 and a Chihuahua at Rs 9,524.
At the other end, a Mudhol Hound costs Rs 260 per kg and a Rajapalayam Rs 333. Price per kilo is a curiosity, not a buying guide, but it shows how far small fashionable breeds are priced above their size.

Upkeep costs far more than the puppy
A typical puppy costs about 4.3 months of that breed's running costs. Over a 10 to 15 year life, food and care cost far more than the purchase.
For a Great Dane the puppy equals just 2.2 months of upkeep, because a Rs 13,500 monthly bill dwarfs a Rs 30,000 puppy. For a Pembroke Welsh Corgi the puppy equals 15.2 months.

What a breeder's price should include
Whatever the price, Indian law sets a minimum. The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Dog Breeding and Marketing) Rules, 2017 require every breeder to register with the State Animal Welfare Board.
Registration costs the breeder a Rs 5,000 fee and lasts two years. Pups under eight weeks old must not be sold, and each pup sold must be microchipped with vaccination records kept.

- Ask to see the breeder's State Animal Welfare Board registration certificate, which must be displayed.
- Check that the puppy is at least eight weeks old and has a microchip.
- Ask for written dates of vaccination and deworming, which the rules require the breeder to give you.
- For KCI puppies, ask for both parents' registrations and any hip, elbow or eye results.
- Never pay an advance for a puppy you have not seen with its mother.
A higher price does not buy these things automatically. A Rs 20,000 puppy from a registered breeder who screens parents is often a better buy than a Rs 60,000 puppy from a dealer.

Frequently asked questions
What is the average price of a puppy in India?
Across 58 breeds, the median pet-quality puppy costs Rs 30,000 and the average is Rs 36,836. A KCI-registered puppy costs a median Rs 56,250. The ranges were compiled by dogeats.in from breeder and marketplace listings in October 2026.
What is the most expensive dog breed in India?
By pet-quality midpoint, the Samoyed and Dogo Argentino are the most expensive at Rs 1 lakh, with ranges reaching Rs 1.2 lakh. With KCI papers, Samoyed, Bernese Mountain Dog, Dogo Argentino, French Bulldog, Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Tibetan Mastiff can reach Rs 1.8 lakh to Rs 2 lakh.
What is the cheapest dog breed in India?
The Indian Pariah Dog, which is usually free to adopt and rarely costs more than Rs 3,000. Among bought breeds, the Mudhol Hound (Rs 3,000 to 10,000) and Chippiparai (Rs 5,000 to 12,000) are the cheapest.
How much does a Labrador cost in India?
A pet-quality Labrador puppy costs Rs 8,000 to 30,000, and a KCI-registered one Rs 30,000 to 60,000. Running costs are about Rs 4,000 to 9,000 a month.
Is a KCI-registered puppy worth the extra money?
KCI papers add a median Rs 25,000, or 1.78 times the pet-quality price. Papers record parentage, not health. The extra is worth it only if the breeder also shows the parents' hip, elbow or eye results.
Why are Indian dog breeds so cheap?
Nine Indian breeds have a median price of Rs 10,000, against Rs 35,000 for foreign breeds. Most are regional breeds with little metro demand, and no import costs are involved.
Is a cheap puppy a scam?
Not always, but a popular foreign breed far below its usual range is a warning sign. A Samoyed, Shiba Inu or French Bulldog offered at Rs 10,000 online is very likely an advance-fee scam. Never pay before seeing the puppy with its mother.
Do dog prices differ between cities?
Yes. Our breed guides note that prices in Mumbai and Delhi typically run 15 to 30 percent above smaller cities. The ranges in this index are national and do not adjust for city.
Methodology and limitations
Price ranges were compiled by dogeats.in from breeder and marketplace listings for our 58 breed guides, October 2026. Each breed has a pet-quality range (no papers, or the typical price) and a KCI-registered range.
For each range we use the midpoint, the average of the low and high figure, to rank and group breeds. Medians are used for group comparisons because a few costly breeds skew averages.
The KCI comparison covers 56 breeds. The Indian Pariah Dog has no KCI range and the Bully Kutta's KCI price is listed as unverifiable, so both are left out of that section.
Monthly running cost is the midpoint of each guide's monthly total. Size class uses the midpoint of adult weight from the breed standards recorded in each guide.
