What does dog food cost per kg in India?

Dry dog food in India costs Rs 100 to Rs 2,203 a kg at MRP. We checked 186 packs from 28 brands listed on Supertails, a large online pet store, on 11 October 2026. The median MRP was Rs 633 a kg.

The bottom of the market is crowded. Meatiful, Waggies, Pedigree, Drools, Purina SuperCoat and Purina Friskies all sell at Rs 100 to Rs 290 a kg in their cheaper packs. The top end is imported or premium food: Royal Canin, Farmina N&D, Acana and Go Native cost Rs 707 to Rs 1,624 a kg.

Price per kg is the right way to compare. Brands sell odd sizes such as 2.8 kg, 12.8 kg and 15.5 kg, and bonus packs add free kilos. Per kg strips that out.

What is the cheapest dog food in India?

By MRP per kg, the cheapest dry dog food we found is Meatiful Premium Chicken Adult. Its 20 kg bag lists at Rs 1,999, or Rs 100 a kg, and sold for Rs 1,839. The 10 kg bag lists at Rs 1,099.

Among the brands most Indian owners know, Waggies is cheapest at Rs 1,899 for 10 kg (Rs 190 a kg), though that bag was shown out of stock. Pedigree follows at Rs 205 a kg in its 20 kg bag. Drools costs Rs 216 a kg in its 2.8 kg plus 1 kg bonus pack, and Purina SuperCoat Rs 225 a kg in its 20 kg bag.

Cheap per kg is not the same as cheap to feed. Feeding amounts differ between foods, so compare the cost of a day's portion using the chart on each bag. Ask your vet which food suits your dog.

How much is a 1 kg pack of dog food in India?

A 1 kg pack of a mass-market brand costs Rs 209 to Rs 290. Waggies Adult is Rs 209, Drools adult flavours Rs 230, Pedigree Chicken and Milk Puppy Rs 259 and Purina Friskies Adult Rs 269. Premium 1 kg packs cost Rs 930 for Purina Pro Plan Medium Adult and Rs 1,050 to Rs 1,120 for Royal Canin Maxi.

For every product sold in both sizes, the 1 kg pack cost more per kg than the 10 kg bag. Waggies Adult falls from Rs 209 to Rs 190 a kg, and Purina Friskies Puppy from Rs 290 to Rs 249.

How much do 3 kg dog food packs cost?

Packs of 2.5 kg to 3.8 kg cost Rs 599 to Rs 3,980 at MRP. The cheapest per kg are Waggies Adult at Rs 599 for 3 kg and Drools bonus packs at Rs 820 for 3.8 kg. Pedigree's 2.8 kg packs cost Rs 655 to Rs 685, and Purina SuperCoat Adult 2.5 kg Rs 680.

Bonus packs change the maths. Drools sells 2.8 kg plus 1 kg free, which works out at Rs 216 to Rs 226 a kg. That is cheaper per kg than the same Drools food in a 1 kg pack.

What is the price of 10 kg and 20 kg dog food bags?

A 10 kg bag of a mass-market brand costs Rs 1,099 to Rs 2,760 at MRP. Pedigree Chicken and Milk Puppy and Purina Friskies Puppy both list at Rs 2,490. Purina SuperCoat Adult is Rs 2,650, SuperCoat Puppy Rs 2,760 and Waggies Adult Rs 1,899.

On PharmEasy, Drools Chicken and Egg Adult 10 kg lists at Rs 2,149 and Pedigree Adult Chicken, Egg and Rice 10 kg at Rs 2,730. Purina SuperCoat Adult 10 kg lists at Rs 2,650, the same MRP as on Supertails. All three were shown out of stock on PharmEasy on 11 October 2026.

Premium 10 kg to 13 kg bags cost far more. Mankind Petstar 10 kg lists at Rs 5,500 to Rs 5,800. Farmina N&D Medium and Maxi 10 kg is Rs 7,600 and Royal Canin Maxi Adult 10 kg Rs 7,850. Go Native 12 kg lists at Rs 11,999 to Rs 12,999. In the 15 kg to 20 kg range, Pedigree 20 kg is Rs 4,100 and Acana Adult Large Breed 17 kg Rs 16,399.

The last table comes from PharmEasy, a second retailer, checked on 11 October 2026. Every item was shown out of stock, so treat these as listed prices. The two stores disagree on Royal Canin: Supertails lists the same Maxi Adult 15 kg bag at Rs 11,000 MRP, PharmEasy at Rs 12,460.

Most brands do not print prices on their own websites. Pedigree, Drools, Royal Canin and Purina India send buyers to retailers. Himalaya Wellness does list MRPs on its online store, checked on 11 October 2026.

Is a bigger bag of dog food cheaper per kg?

Usually, but not always. Pedigree Chicken and Milk Puppy comes in ten sizes on Supertails. The 20 kg bag costs Rs 205 a kg at MRP, against Rs 297 for the 370 g pouch and Rs 304 for the 1.2 kg pack.

The steps are uneven. The 5.5 kg bag costs Rs 264 a kg, more than the 2.8 kg bag at Rs 245. The 15 kg bag costs Rs 236 a kg, more than the 12.8 kg bag at Rs 228.

Other brands show smaller savings. Farmina N&D Medium and Maxi falls from Rs 995 a kg in 2 kg to Rs 760 in 10 kg, a 24% drop. Mankind Petstar Duck and Oats falls from Rs 620 to Rs 550, or 11%.

How much does dog food cost per month in India?

It depends on how much your dog eats, and a Labrador eats far more than a Pomeranian. For every 100 g a day, a dog eats about 3 kg a month. At MRP, that costs Rs 300 on Meatiful 20 kg and Rs 615 on Pedigree 20 kg.

The same 3 kg costs Rs 2,280 on Farmina N&D Medium and Maxi and Rs 2,355 on Royal Canin Maxi Adult 10 kg. Multiply by your dog's daily amount in hundreds of grams. A dog fed 300 g a day on Pedigree 20 kg costs about Rs 1,845 a month.

Feeding amounts vary by brand, weight and activity, so follow the chart on the bag. Our adult feeding guide and puppy feeding guide explain portions. Our cost of owning a dog report sets food against other monthly costs.

What is the GST on dog food in India?

Dog and cat food attracts 18% GST: 9% central tax plus 9% state tax, or 18% IGST. The rate change that took effect on 22 September 2025 did not move pet food to 5%. Notification 9/2025-Central Tax (Rate), dated 17 September 2025, lists only fish soluble paste under heading 2309 in its 5% schedule.

Dog food, tariff item 2309 10 00, therefore falls in residual entry 639 of Schedule II, at 9% central tax. Some tax websites list pet food at 5%; the notification text does not support that. MRP includes GST, so tax is 18/118 of the sticker price, or about 15.3%.

Two amendments followed, and neither touched pet food. Notification 19/2025, dated 31 December 2025, added biris and tobacco entries from 1 February 2026. Notification 01/2026, dated 30 April 2026, changed four drinks entries from 1 May 2026. CBIC listed no later rate notification up to 11 October 2026.

On a Rs 2,490 bag of Pedigree, about Rs 380 is GST. On a Rs 7,850 bag of Royal Canin Maxi Adult, it is about Rs 1,197.

Do online stores sell dog food below MRP?

Mostly, and by small margins. On Supertails, 141 of 186 packs sold below MRP on 11 October 2026. The median discount was 8.0%, which cut the median price from Rs 633 to Rs 558 a kg.

Large bags carry the bigger cuts. Pedigree's 20 kg bag sold for Rs 3,489 against an MRP of Rs 4,100, a 15% discount. Small pouches such as Pedigree 370 g sold at MRP.

Stock also matters. 135 of the 186 packs were shown in stock. Prices change often, so check the MRP printed on the bag before you pay. Food is only part of the bill; our cheapest and most expensive dogs report adds the puppy price.

• Compare MRP per kg, not pack price.
• Count bonus kilos: a 2.8 kg plus 1 kg free pack is 3.8 kg.
• Check the manufacture date; kibble loses freshness after opening.
• Switch foods over 7 to 10 days, and ask your vet before changing a puppy, senior or sick dog's diet.
• See our best dog food brands guide for what the label should show.

Methodology and limitations

We downloaded the public product listings of Supertails, a large Indian online pet retailer, on 11 October 2026 at about 7.20 am IST. The store's bot check stopped the download after 3,250 of its products, so this is a partial snapshot, not the full catalogue.

From that snapshot we kept dry dog food packs of 300 g or more and dropped veterinary and prescription diets, taster packs, combos with non-food items and two-for-one offers. We removed packs where the listed weight and pack name disagreed, and counted a pack listed more than once as one pack.

MRP per kg is the MRP divided by the total weight, including free kilos in bonus packs. Selling price is the store's price on the same day. MRP is the compare-at price in the store's listing; where none is given, MRP equals the selling price.

The same morning we opened the Supertails product pages for the main Royal Canin Maxi and Purina SuperCoat lines, which the bulk download had missed, and added 38 packs. That gave 186 packs from 28 brands. Variants that only add free wet food pouches were counted once, under the dry pack.

Four large packs from Pedigree, Drools, Purina SuperCoat and Royal Canin come from PharmEasy product pages opened on 11 October 2026; all four were shown out of stock. Himalaya MRPs come from the Himalaya Wellness online store, which labels them MRP inclusive of all taxes. Pedigree, Drools, Royal Canin and Purina India publish no prices on their websites.

The GST rate comes from Notification 9/2025-Central Tax (Rate) of 17 September 2025, in force from 22 September 2025, read with amendments 19/2025 and 01/2026. GST inside MRP is MRP x 18/118. Monthly cost per 100 g a day is 3 kg at MRP per kg.
