Cheapest and Most Expensive Dogs in India 2026: Dog Prices Under Rs 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000, and the Rs 2 Lakh Breeds
The cheapest dog in India is the Indian Pariah Dog, or Indie, which is free to adopt or costs up to about Rs 3,000. The most expensive pet-quality puppies are the Samoyed and the Dogo Argentino at Rs 80,000 to 1.2 lakh, and five breeds reach Rs 2 lakh with KCI papers. Of 58 breeds we track, 8 have a price range that starts at Rs 5,000 or less, and 7 of those 8 are Indian breeds.

Key findings
- The Indian Pariah Dog is the only breed you can get for under Rs 2,000, because it is usually free to adopt and rarely sold above Rs 3,000.
- Only 8 of 58 breeds have a price range starting at Rs 5,000 or less, and 7 of them are Indian breeds; the German Spitz is the only foreign one.
- 13 of 58 breeds start at Rs 10,000 or less, but only 2, the Indie and the Mudhol Hound, sit fully within a Rs 10,000 budget.
- The Samoyed and Dogo Argentino are the most expensive pet-quality puppies, at Rs 80,000 to 1.2 lakh, a midpoint of Rs 1 lakh.
- With KCI papers, five breeds reach Rs 2 lakh: Bernese Mountain Dog, Dogo Argentino, French Bulldog, Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Tibetan Mastiff.
- Nine Indian breeds have a median pet-quality price of Rs 10,000, against Rs 35,000 for 49 foreign breeds.
- Counting the puppy and 12 months of running costs, an Indie costs about Rs 40,500 in year one and a Tibetan Mastiff about Rs 2.49 lakh.
- The 10 cheapest breeds score 4.2 out of 5 on tolerating Indian heat; the 11 dearest score 1.6.
- A viral Rs 50 crore dog in Bengaluru was not worth "even a lakh", Enforcement Directorate sources told PTI in April 2025.
What is the cheapest dog in India?
The cheapest dog in India is the Indian Pariah Dog, often called the Indie or desi dog. Most are adopted free from shelters, feeders and rescue groups, and paid puppies rarely cost more than Rs 3,000. No other breed in our 58 guides starts below Rs 3,000.
The next cheapest are Indian sighthounds and the Indian Spitz. The Mudhol Hound sells for Rs 3,000 to 10,000 and the Chippiparai for Rs 5,000 to 12,000. Kanni, Kombai, Rajapalayam and Indian Spitz puppies cost Rs 5,000 to 15,000.
The cheapest foreign breed is the German Spitz at Rs 5,000 to 20,000. The Pug costs Rs 8,000 to 20,000 and a pet-quality Labrador Rs 8,000 to 30,000. Those three are the only foreign breeds with a range that starts below Rs 10,000.

Which dogs can you buy in India under Rs 2,000, 5,000 or 10,000?
Under Rs 2,000, the only realistic option is an adopted Indie. No bought breed in our data starts that low. Under Rs 5,000, eight breeds have a price range that begins at or below that figure: seven Indian breeds and the German Spitz.
A range that starts below your budget does not mean most puppies sell there. Only the Indie sits fully under Rs 5,000. Under Rs 10,000, 13 breeds start in budget, but only the Indie and the Mudhol Hound sit fully within it.
The picture opens up at Rs 20,000. Some 32 of 58 breeds have a range starting at or below that sum, and 11 breeds sit fully within it. All 11 are Indian breeds or small dogs such as the Pug, Lhasa Apso and German Spitz.

Searches for a dog "under Rs 500" or "under Rs 1,000" are common. At those prices, the honest answer is adoption. A foreign breed offered online at that price is a scam sign, which we cover below.
What is the most expensive dog breed in India?
The most expensive pet-quality puppies in India are the Samoyed and the Dogo Argentino. Both sell for Rs 80,000 to 1.2 lakh, a midpoint of Rs 1 lakh. The Bernese Mountain Dog and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi follow at Rs 60,000 to 1 lakh.
With KCI registration or claimed show lines, prices climb further. Five breeds reach Rs 2 lakh at the top of the papered range: Bernese Mountain Dog, Dogo Argentino, French Bulldog, Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Tibetan Mastiff. The Samoyed tops out at Rs 1.8 lakh.
Six breeds reach Rs 1 lakh even without papers: Samoyed, Dogo Argentino, Bernese Mountain Dog, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Tibetan Mastiff and Shiba Inu. None of the 58 breeds tops Rs 2 lakh in our listings.

Six breeds in our data are named on the Centre's March 2024 list of "ferocious" dogs. They are the Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Kangal, Rhodesian Ridgeback and Cane Corso. The list also has open-ended "Terriers" and "Mastiffs" lines that could reach other breeds. The Karnataka High Court quashed the circular on 10 April 2024. Our banned breeds tracker follows the court cases and local rules.
Is there really a Rs 50 crore dog in India?
No sale on that scale has been shown. In April 2025, a Bengaluru man's claim that he had imported a Rs 50 crore dog went viral. He described it as a cross between a Caucasian Shepherd and a wolf.
The Enforcement Directorate visited his home. PTI, quoting ED sources on 17 April 2025, reported that the claim was fake and the dog belonged to his neighbour. Officials said it was not worth "even a lakh" of rupees.
The sources also said no probe had been started under the Foreign Exchange Management Act. So the viral figure is a social media claim, not a price. The highest documented-range prices in our data stop at Rs 2 lakh.
How many dog breeds cost under Rs 20,000 in India?
Thirteen of 58 breeds have a pet-quality midpoint under Rs 20,000. Only 3 sit under Rs 10,000: the Indie, the Mudhol Hound and the Chippiparai. The largest groups are Rs 20,000 to 30,000 (15 breeds) and Rs 30,000 to 50,000 (16 breeds).
At the top, 14 breeds have a midpoint of Rs 50,000 or more. Eight of those sit at Rs 75,000 or above. The median across all 58 is Rs 30,000, as our dog breed price index shows in full.

Are Indian dog breeds cheaper than foreign breeds?
Yes, by a wide margin. The nine Indian breeds in our guides have a median pet-quality price of Rs 10,000. The 49 foreign breeds have a median of Rs 35,000, three and a half times as much.
Seven Indian breeds have a range that tops out at Rs 15,000 or less. The exceptions are the Rampur Greyhound at Rs 8,000 to 20,000 and the Bully Kutta at Rs 15,000 to 50,000. Bully Kutta prices vary widely and claimed show lines cannot be verified.
A low price says nothing about quality. Our Indian breeds guide covers their diet and care.

Is a cheap dog also cheaper to keep?
Mostly, yes. We added the puppy price midpoint to 12 months of running costs from each breed guide. On that basis, an Indie costs about Rs 40,500 in its first year and a Tibetan Mastiff about Rs 2.49 lakh.
The median first-year cost across 58 breeds is Rs 1.18 lakh. The puppy price is a median 26.5% of that sum. For the Pembroke Welsh Corgi it is 56%, so most of its first-year bill is the purchase.
Giant breeds turn this around. A Great Dane costs Rs 20,000 to 40,000 as a pet-quality puppy, but its running cost is Rs 9,000 to 18,000 a month. The puppy is only 16% of its first-year cost. See our cost of owning a dog by size report for the full monthly breakdown.

Do expensive dog breeds suit Indian weather?
Most do not. We compared the 10 cheapest breeds by midpoint (Rs 14,000 or less) with the 11 dearest (Rs 65,000 or more). The cheap group averages 4.2 out of 5 on tolerating Indian heat. The dear group averages 1.6.
The same gap shows on coping without AC: 4.3 against 1.7. Six of the 11 score 1 on both: Samoyed, Alaskan Malamute, Bernese Mountain Dog, Tibetan Mastiff, French Bulldog and English Bulldog. That means running AC through summer, which adds to the electricity bill.
Our heat risk ranking sets out the scores for every breed. The ratings are dogeats.in editorial scores from 1 to 5, not veterinary measurements.

How do you buy a cheap puppy safely, or adopt instead?
Adoption is the cheapest route, but few Indians use it. A Mars Petcare and Ipsos survey of 1,000 Indian pet parents, run in March and April 2024, found only 6% of puppies were adopted from shelters. Pet shops supplied 23% and breeders 17%. Our adoption statistics report has more.
If you buy, the law sets a floor. The Dog Breeding and Marketing Rules, 2017 require breeders to register with the State Animal Welfare Board for a non-refundable Rs 5,000 fee. Registration lasts two years. Our report on breeding licences and puppy mills covers enforcement.

- Under the 2017 rules, pups under eight weeks old must not be sold.
- Each pup sold must be micro-chipped, with treatment and vaccination records kept.
- Dogs over six months must be sterilised before sale, unless sold to a registered breeder.
- The breeder must give the buyer, in writing, feeding details and the dates of inoculations and de-worming.
- A popular foreign breed, such as a Samoyed or Shiba Inu, offered at a fraction of the ranges above is a strong scam sign. Never pay before seeing the puppy with its mother.
Price is not a health test. Ask your vet to check any puppy within the first week, whatever it cost.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest dog in India?
The Indian Pariah Dog, or Indie, is the cheapest dog in India. Most are adopted free, and paid puppies rarely cost more than Rs 3,000. Among bought breeds, the Mudhol Hound (Rs 3,000 to 10,000) and Chippiparai (Rs 5,000 to 12,000) are the cheapest.
Which dog can I buy in India under Rs 5,000?
Eight of 58 breeds have a price range that starts at Rs 5,000 or less. They are the Indie, Mudhol Hound, Chippiparai, Kanni, Kombai, Rajapalayam, Indian Spitz and German Spitz. Only the Indie sits fully below Rs 5,000.
Which dog can I buy in India under Rs 10,000?
Thirteen breeds start at Rs 10,000 or less, including the Pug, Labrador, Pomeranian and Lhasa Apso at the low end of their ranges. Only the Indie and the Mudhol Hound sit fully within Rs 10,000.
Can I get a dog in India under Rs 2,000?
Yes, by adopting an Indie from a shelter or rescue group, which is often free. No bought breed in our 58 guides starts below Rs 3,000. A foreign breed offered at that price is very likely a scam.
What is the most expensive dog in India?
Among pet-quality puppies, the Samoyed and Dogo Argentino are the most expensive at Rs 80,000 to 1.2 lakh. With KCI papers, five breeds reach Rs 2 lakh: Bernese Mountain Dog, Dogo Argentino, French Bulldog, Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Tibetan Mastiff.
Is the Rs 50 crore dog in Bengaluru real?
No sale was shown. In April 2025, PTI quoted Enforcement Directorate sources saying the claim was fake. The dog belonged to a neighbour and was not worth "even a lakh" of rupees.
Are Indian dog breeds cheaper than foreign ones?
Yes. Nine Indian breeds have a median pet-quality price of Rs 10,000, against Rs 35,000 for 49 foreign breeds. Indian breeds also score higher on heat tolerance in our ratings.
What is the cheapest small dog in India?
Among breeds under 10 kg, the German Spitz (Rs 5,000 to 20,000) and Pug (Rs 8,000 to 20,000) are the cheapest. The Lhasa Apso costs Rs 10,000 to 20,000 and the Pomeranian Rs 10,000 to 25,000.
How much does a dog cost in the first year in India?
Adding the puppy price midpoint to 12 months of running costs gives a median of Rs 1.18 lakh across 58 breeds. It ranges from about Rs 40,500 for an Indie to Rs 2.49 lakh for a Tibetan Mastiff. Vaccinations and emergencies come on top.
Methodology and limitations
Price ranges compiled by dogeats.in from breeder and marketplace listings for our 58 breed guides, October 2026. Each breed has a pet-quality range and, where one exists, a KCI-registered or papered range. Midpoints are the average of the low and high ends.
Budget counts use the low end of each pet-quality range: a breed counts as available under Rs 5,000 if its range starts at or below Rs 5,000. "Fully within budget" means the high end is at or below the amount.
First-year cost is the pet-quality midpoint plus 12 times the midpoint of the monthly running cost in each breed guide. It excludes setup costs, the puppy vaccination series, insurance and emergencies.
For Kanni, Kombai, Chippiparai and Rampur Greyhound the papered tier means puppies from documented lines. For the Pit Bull it means registered parents, and for the American Eskimo Dog KCI or AKC papers. The Bully Kutta's papered price is excluded as unverifiable. Breed scores are dogeats.in editorial ratings from 1 to 5.
Size groups use the midpoint of each breed's adult weight range: small is under 10 kg. Public figures come from the PTI report of 17 April 2025, the Mars Petcare and Ipsos survey reported on 27 December 2024, and G.S.R. 496(E) of 23 May 2017.
