Dog Breed Lifespan in India: How Long 58 Breeds Live, by Size, Origin and Heat Tolerance
Across 58 breeds kept in India, the median lifespan is 13 years. Giant breeds average 9.5 years and toy breeds 13.8 years, so size is the strongest predictor. The Kanni, Chihuahua and Belgian Malinois live longest at 14 to 16 years; the English Mastiff lives shortest at 6 to 10.

Key findings
- The median lifespan across 58 breeds in our guides is 13 years, and the average is 12.3 years.
- Giant breeds average 9.5 years, toy breeds 13.8 years. Across all 58 breeds, weight and lifespan have a correlation of minus 0.76.
- 8 breeds have a lifespan midpoint under 10 years: six giant breeds, the Bernese Mountain Dog and the English Bulldog.
- The Belgian Malinois, Chihuahua and Kanni share the longest midpoint at 15 years, each with a 14 to 16 year range.
- The English Mastiff has the shortest range at 6 to 10 years, followed by the Bullmastiff at 7 to 9.
- The 13 breeds we rate 1 out of 5 for Indian heat average 10.7 years, against 13.6 years for the 9 breeds rated 4.
- Nine Indian breeds average 12.9 years against 12.2 years for 49 foreign breeds; among dogs of 15 to 35 kg the gap is 13.3 against 12.3 years.
- UK vet records give much shorter lives for flat-faced breeds than breed clubs do: 4.5 years for the French Bulldog against 10 to 12 in breed standards.
How long do dogs live in India?
Across the 58 breeds in our guides, the median lifespan is 13 years. Half the breeds have a midpoint above 13 years and half below.
The range is wide. Small breeds and Indian sighthounds often reach 14 to 16 years, while giant breeds often die before 10.
These figures come from AKC and breed club data recorded in each guide. They describe what the breed typically achieves, not a promise for any one dog.

Indian breeds feature near the top. The Kanni, a sighthound from Tamil Nadu, and the Indian Pariah Dog both reach 16 years at the top of their ranges. Our Kanni guide covers the breed in full.
The Poodle and Shih Tzu have the highest upper figures, at 18 years. Their ranges are also the widest in our data, at 8 years each, because both cover very different individual dogs.
The shortest-lived breeds
The English Mastiff has the shortest lifespan in our guides, at 6 to 10 years. The Bullmastiff follows at 7 to 9, then the Great Dane and Bernese Mountain Dog at 7 to 10.
Eight breeds have a midpoint under 10 years. Six are giant breeds by weight. The other two are the Bernese Mountain Dog, a heavy large breed, and the English Bulldog, a flat-faced breed.

The Bernese Mountain Dog is often cited for its short life, and our Bernese guide explains the cancer risk behind it. In India it also faces heat it was never bred for.
Do small dogs live longer than big dogs?
Yes. Toy breeds in our data average 13.8 years and giant breeds 9.5 years, a gap of more than four years. Lifespan falls steadily as size rises.
Across all 58 breeds, adult weight and lifespan have a correlation of minus 0.76, the strongest link between any two figures in our breed data.
UK research agrees on the direction. A 2024 study of 584,734 dogs in Scientific Reports found a median of 12.7 years for small purebreds against 11.9 for large ones.

Breeds that struggle in heat also die younger
The 13 breeds we rate 1 out of 5 for Indian heat average 10.7 years. The 9 breeds rated 4 average 13.6 years, and the 8 rated 5 average 13 years.
The heat score does not cause the shorter life on its own. The worst heat group is also the heaviest, averaging 33.8 kg, and includes every flat-faced breed except the Shih Tzu.
The link still matters for owners. A breed that is short lived and heat sensitive has less margin for a bad Delhi May or a humid Chennai June.

How long do flat-faced breeds like Pugs and French Bulldogs live?
Breed clubs give the Pug 13 to 15 years and the French Bulldog 10 to 12, but UK vet records say less.
A 2022 VetCompass study of 30,563 UK dogs put life expectancy at birth at 7.7 years for the Pug and 4.5 years for the French Bulldog. A larger 2024 study put their median lifespans at 11.6 and 9.8 years.
The two studies measure different things, and the authors note that the French Bulldog figure is pulled down by a young, fast-growing population. Both still put the Pug and French Bulldog below their breed club ranges.

| Breed | Breed club range (years) | UK median lifespan, McMillan 2024 (years) | UK life expectancy at birth, Teng 2022 (years) | Heat score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pug | 13 to 15 | 11.6 | 7.65 | 1 |
| Shih Tzu | 10 to 18 | not reported | 11.05 | 2 |
| Pekingese | 12 to 14 | not reported | not reported | 1 |
| French Bulldog | 10 to 12 | 9.8 | 4.53 | 1 |
| English Bulldog | 8 to 10 | 9.8 | 7.39 | 1 |
Across all flat-faced purebreds, the 2024 study found a median of 11.2 years against 12.8 for breeds with a medium-length muzzle. Four of the five flat-faced breeds in our guides score 1 out of 5 for Indian heat.
If you own one, plan for air conditioning and walks only at dawn and after dark from March to June. Our Pug guide and French Bulldog guide set out the breathing risks in detail.
Giant breeds die young
Giant breeds age faster. In our data, the nine giant breeds average 9.5 years, and none has a midpoint above 12.
The Kangal lives longest among giants, at 11 to 13 years. The English Mastiff, Bullmastiff and Great Dane sit at the bottom, with ranges starting at 6 or 7 years.
UK data shows the same pattern. The 2024 study recorded medians of 8.1 years for the Cane Corso, 9.0 for the Mastiff and 9.3 for the St Bernard.
| Breed | Adult weight (kg) | Lifespan (years) | Midpoint (years) | Heat score | Origin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kangal | 40 to 60 | 11 to 13 | 12 | 3 | Foreign |
| Tibetan Mastiff | 32 to 68 | 10 to 12 | 11 | 1 | Foreign |
| Cane Corso | 40 to 50 | 9 to 12 | 10.5 | 3 | Foreign |

| English Mastiff | 54 to 104 | 6 to 10 | 8 | 1 | Foreign |
| Bullmastiff | 41 to 59 | 7 to 9 | 8 | 1 | Foreign |
The Bully Kutta, the only Indian giant breed in our guides, lives 8 to 10 years. Being Indian does not offset the effect of size.
Breed club figures against UK vet records
The two do not always match. For 20 breeds we can compare our breed club figures with UK studies. The 2022 life tables come in lower for all 15 breeds they share with us, most of all for flat-faced and toy breeds.
The Chihuahua is the clearest case. Breed clubs say 14 to 16 years, but the 2022 VetCompass life tables give 7.9 years at birth. Early deaths in young dogs pull that figure down.
We publish breed club figures because they are the standard reference. We show the UK data beside them so readers can see the spread. No comparable Indian dataset exists that we could find.

Indian breeds live slightly longer
In our data, nine Indian breeds average 12.9 years and 49 foreign breeds 12.2 years.
Comparing dogs of similar size makes the gap clearer. Among breeds of 15 to 35 kg, seven Indian breeds average 13.3 years and 16 foreign breeds 12.3 years.
The Kanni and Indian Pariah Dog are among the longest lived in our data. The Rajapalayam, at 10 to 12 years, and the Bully Kutta, at 8 to 10, are the exceptions.

Frequently asked questions
What is the average lifespan of a dog in India?
Across 58 breeds in our guides, the median lifespan is 13 years and the average is 12.3 years. Small breeds and Indian sighthounds often reach 14 to 16 years, while giant breeds average 9.5.
Which dog breed lives the longest?
In our guides the Belgian Malinois, Chihuahua and Kanni share the highest midpoint, 15 years, with ranges of 14 to 16. The Poodle and Shih Tzu can reach 18 years at the top of their ranges.
Which dog breed has the shortest life?
The English Mastiff, at 6 to 10 years, followed by the Bullmastiff at 7 to 9 and the Great Dane and Bernese Mountain Dog at 7 to 10. All are large or giant breeds.
How long does a Labrador live in India?
Breed clubs give 11 to 13 years. UK studies put the Labrador at a median 13.1 years (McMillan 2024) and a life expectancy at birth of 11.8 years (Teng 2022). Heat and weight gain are the main risks in India.
How long do Pugs live?
Breed clubs say 13 to 15 years. UK vet records give a median of 11.6 years and a life expectancy at birth of 7.7 years. Pugs struggle in Indian heat, so keep them cool and lean, and ask your vet about breathing checks.
Do Indian dog breeds live longer?
Slightly. Nine Indian breeds average 12.9 years against 12.2 for foreign breeds. Among dogs of 15 to 35 kg the gap is 13.3 against 12.3 years. The Bully Kutta, a giant, lives only 8 to 10.
Why do big dogs have shorter lives?
Large and giant breeds age faster and face more joint disease, bloat and cancer. In our data, adult weight and lifespan have a correlation of minus 0.76. Giant breeds average 9.5 years against 13.8 for toy breeds.
Does Indian heat shorten a dog's life?
We cannot prove that from our data. Breeds we rate worst for heat do average 10.7 years against 13.6 for heat-tolerant ones, but they are also heavier. Heatstroke can kill any breed, so ask your vet about summer care.
Methodology and limitations
Lifespan ranges come from the 58 dogeats.in breed guides, which record figures from AKC and breed club data. We use the midpoint of each range for ranking and averages.
Size class uses the midpoint of adult weight. Toy is under 5 kg, small 5 to 12 kg, medium 12 to 25 kg, large 25 to 45 kg, and giant 45 kg and above.
Heat scores are dogeats.in editorial ratings from 1 to 5. Flat-faced breeds are the five whose guides list brachycephalic airway disease: Pug, Shih Tzu, Pekingese, French Bulldog and English Bulldog. The Boxer is marked mild.
UK comparison figures come from McMillan et al. (2024) and Teng et al. (2022), as published. We matched breeds by name; the McMillan Dachshund figure is for the miniature variety.
