The best dog breeds for Bangalore apartments are the Poodle (92.9 of 100), Chihuahua (87.1) and Indian Pariah Dog (85.7) in our ranking of 58 breeds. Flat size matters more than climate here, and draft civic rules would cap dogs by flat area.

Key findings
- The Poodle tops our Bangalore apartment ranking with 92.9 of 100, ahead of the Chihuahua (87.1) and Indian Pariah Dog (85.7).
- Our guides name Bengaluru as a good city for 49 of 58 breeds and a hard one for only 2, the Bernese Mountain Dog and Saint Bernard.
- Bengaluru's hottest month is April, when the city observatory averages 34.1 C, against 39.9 C for Delhi in May.
- Bengaluru had 0 Poor AQI days in 2025 and in 2026 to 14 October, but its Good days fell from 41 to 12 over the same stretch of the year.
- A draft civic rule would allow 1 dog in a flat of up to 581 sq ft and 2 in a flat of 581 to 1,163 sq ft.
- Dog bite cases rose to 18,140 from January to May 2026, against 11,647 in the same months of 2025.
- BBMP's 2023 survey counted 2,79,335 street dogs, 71.85% of them sterilised.
- Bengaluru Urban had 36% less rain than normal in the June to September 2026 monsoon, PTI reported.
Which dog breeds are best for Bangalore apartments?
The Poodle is the best dog for a Bangalore apartment in our ranking, with 92.9 of 100. The Chihuahua follows at 87.1 and the Indian Pariah Dog at 85.7. The Lhasa Apso is fourth at 82.1.
We scored all 58 breeds in our guides for apartment life in Bengaluru. Flat living counts three times. Staying alone, beginner-friendliness, monsoon and heat count once each, because the city's mild weather matters less than space and routine.
A breed then gains or loses points for what its guide says about Bengaluru. Small breeds dominate the top 20, and 11 breeds score a full 5 for flat living.

dogeats.in editorial score from our 58 breed guides, October 2026. Flat x3; stays alone, beginner, monsoon and heat x1 each; plus or minus points for each guide's Bengaluru verdict. Green = Indian breed.

How many dogs can you keep in a Bangalore flat?
Today there is no notified limit. A draft prepared for the Greater Bengaluru Authority would allow 1 dog in a home of up to 581 sq ft and 2 dogs from 581 to 1,163 sq ft. Homes of 1,453 to 2,325 sq ft could keep 3, Oneindia reported on 16 September 2026.
The same draft would make registration compulsory for dogs over three months, at Rs 500 a year. Indian and mixed-breed dogs would pay Rs 50. Owners would also need a microchip, a rabies shot from a GBA-authorised vet and spaying for dogs over 12 months.
The rules take effect only if the state government notifies them. Animal welfare groups oppose the limits. Our housing society rules report explains what societies can and cannot ban.

Can a Labrador, Golden Retriever or Husky live in Bangalore?
A Labrador or Golden Retriever can live well in Bangalore. Their guides call it the easiest large city for these breeds. In our apartment ranking the Labrador is 22nd with 70 and the Golden 26th with 67.1, held back by space, not climate.
A Husky is still a poor fit. It ranks 55th of 58 with 27.9, and its guide calls Bengaluru workable only with AC and a very committed, athletic owner. The Border Collie ranks 53rd because it needs far more exercise than a flat allows.
Flat-faced breeds rank higher than in other cities. The Pug is 16th and the French Bulldog 18th, but both score 1 of 5 for heat. Their guides say they need a fan or AC even here.
dogeats.in editorial score, October 2026. Amber = the guide names Bengaluru as good only with a condition such as AC, a clip or a very active owner.

Public dog parks are rare. The best-known is in Domlur, an 8,000 sq ft site that residents turned from a garbage dump into a dog park; we could not confirm it was formally adopted. Our stray dogs by city report has more detail.
Which dog breeds suit Bangalore apartments least?
The Bernese Mountain Dog and Saint Bernard share the lowest score, 13.6. They are the only two breeds whose guides call Bengaluru hard, as still too warm for their coats. Both score 1 for flat living.
Big, high-energy working breeds also sit low, because the ranking weights flat life heavily. The Siberian Husky (27.9), Tibetan Mastiff (31.4) and Border Collie (33.6) need space a typical flat cannot give.

Methodology and limitations
Breed scores are dogeats.in editorial ratings from 1 to 5, taken from our 58 breed guides (October 2026). The Bengaluru apartment score is a weighted average: Suits a flat x3, and Can stay alone, Beginner friendly, Handles monsoon and Tolerates Indian heat x1 each. The average is multiplied by 20 to give a score out of 100.
We then read each guide's good-city and hard-city lines for Bengaluru or Bangalore. A good line with no condition adds 10 points, and a hard line subtracts 15. A good line with a condition such as AC, a fan, a clip or a yard adds 5. Scores are capped at 0 and 100.
Climate normals are IMD climatological tables for the Bengaluru city observatory and HAL airport, 1991 to 2020. April and October records by year come from IMD Meteorological Centre Bengaluru's monthly extremes sheets, read from the October 2026 sheet and an April 2026 copy in the Internet Archive. Heatwave days are IMD sub-division counts from Lok Sabha question 4494.
AQI counts come from 651 CPCB daily bulletins (4 pm) from 2 January 2025 to 14 October 2026, which we downloaded and parsed. Humidity and muggy days come from the Copernicus ERA5 reanalysis via the Open-Meteo archive and are modelled.
Draft rules, survey counts, bites, shelters and vet numbers come from Lok Sabha answers, civic data and named news reports, with dates in the tables. Vets per lakh are registered vets on 31 March 2024 divided by NCRB 2024 population.
