  4. Chocolate and cocoa make 18 foods toxic, and 9 of them are branded products sold in kirana stores.
  5. Grapes and raisins are the main hazard in 5 foods, including kheer, where kishmish is a standard garnish.
  6. 39 of the 147 toxic foods are Indian or Indo-Chinese dishes, and 65 are single ingredients or products.
  7. 27 toxic foods involve other causes, such as oxalates in arbi leaves and star fruit, solanine in raw potato, and cooked bones that splinter.
  8. Onion and garlic damage is slow: the MSD Veterinary Manual says red cell destruction typically shows 3 to 5 days after the meal.

What are the most toxic foods for dogs in an Indian kitchen?

Onion and garlic, in every form. Of the 147 foods rated toxic on dogeats.in, 64 (43.5%) are toxic mainly because of onion, garlic or a close relative such as spring onion, shallot, leek or chives.

The next biggest groups are chocolate and cocoa (18 foods), extreme sugar and fat (10), caffeine (7), salt and pickling (6) and chilli (6). Grapes and raisins account for 5, xylitol for 2.

Some of these are poisons at small doses, such as grapes, xylitol and garlic. Others, such as pickle or jalebi, are toxic because the salt or sugar load is far beyond what a dog's body handles. Both groups are on the do-not-feed list.

How common each hazard is

Sugar and frying are the most common hazards overall, named in the quick answer for 363 of 905 foods. Onion or garlic is named for 250, salt for 217 and chilli for 164.

Frequency is not the same as danger. Sugar and oil mostly push foods into caution, while onion and garlic push them into toxic. Of the 250 foods that name onion or garlic, 69 are rated toxic.

The rare hazards are the deadliest per gram. Xylitol, grapes and macadamia nuts appear in few foods, but small amounts can cause serious harm.

Everyday dishes that hide onion and garlic

The quick answer names onion or garlic for 114 of the 301 cooked Indian dishes we rated. Of those, 20 are rated toxic and 94 need caution because the dish is unsafe as usually cooked.

The everyday list includes dal tadka, rajma rice, chana masala, sambar, upma, pulao, butter chicken and palak paneer. Onion sits in the gravy base and garlic in the tadka. Both also hide in ginger-garlic paste and packet masala.

Cooking does not make them safe. Fried, roasted, dried and powdered onion and garlic all carry the compounds that damage a dog's red blood cells. Dried onion and garlic powder, used in chaat masala and many curry powders, pack more allium into less weight.

The MSD Veterinary Manual reports clinical signs in dogs after 15 to 30 g of raw onion per kg of body weight. The figure is not a safe limit: damage builds with repeated small doses, so no amount is a treat.

The raw allium family is all toxic in our dataset: Onion, Garlic, Spring Onion, Shallot, Leek and Chives. See our pages on onion and garlic for detail.

The fix is the Spiced Scrap Rule: set the dog's share of dal, rice or vegetables aside before the tadka or masala goes in.

Toxic sweets, drinks and snacks

Chocolate leads this group with 18 foods. They range from Cadbury Dairy Milk, 5 Star and KitKat to Bournvita, Oreo and black forest cake. The MSD Veterinary Manual says signs usually start 6 to 12 hours after eating.

Caffeine makes 7 foods toxic, including cola, Thums Up, kahwa and matcha. Grapes and raisins make 5 foods toxic, and the Manual links the same kidney damage to tamarind. That matters in Indian kitchens, where imli goes into chutney, sambar and puliyodarai.

Sugar alone makes 10 foods toxic, mostly mithai such as gulab jamun, jalebi, barfi and peda. Xylitol, a sweetener in some sugar-free products and protein bars, is toxic in small amounts.

The MSD Veterinary Manual says more than one grape or raisin per 4.5 kg of body weight may be enough to risk kidney injury. A few kishmish in a bowl of kheer can be enough for a small dog.

Festival weeks concentrate these foods. Our festival food danger calendar shows when each one peaks.

Are chilli, pickle and masala toxic to dogs?

Our pages rate 6 chilli and masala foods as toxic, and 6 more as toxic mainly for salt. Achaar is the clearest case: mango and lime pickle combine heavy salt, oil, chilli and mustard.

Chilli is less a poison than a strong irritant. It causes burning pain, drooling, vomiting and diarrhoea, and dogs do not build a tolerance to it. Spice blends add a second risk, because many contain onion or garlic powder.

Hing (asafoetida) sits in our other-causes group. Our pages rate hing toxic, and that is why some fried snacks such as sev and murukku also land on the toxic list.

Plants, fruits and other toxic items

27 toxic foods do not fit the big groups. They include arbi (colocasia) leaves and star fruit, both high in oxalates, and raw potato and green tomato, which carry solanine. Neem leaves, wild mushrooms and cooked bones are also here.

Some of these ratings are stricter than other references. ASPCA describes small amounts of citrus as usually causing only mild stomach upset, while our pages rate lemon and lime toxic. ASPCA also says avocado mainly harms birds, rabbits and livestock, while our page rates it toxic for dogs.

We keep the stricter verdicts because the cost of caution is low. Readers should know that the sources differ on these few foods.

Signs of poisoning and when to call the vet

Call your vet as soon as you know your dog ate a toxic food, even if it looks fine. Several hazards act slowly, so a normal dog at dinner can be ill two days later. Note what was eaten, roughly how much, and when.

Do not make your dog vomit at home unless a vet tells you to. Do not give milk, salt water or home remedies. Take the wrapper or a sample of the food with you.

Dose figures in this report describe when signs have been seen, not a safe amount. If your dog ate any toxic food, phone your vet first and ask questions later.

The MSD Veterinary Manual gives chocolate thresholds of about 20 mg/kg of methylxanthines for mild signs and 40 to 50 mg/kg for heart effects. Dark and baking chocolate reach those levels far faster than milk chocolate, so a vet will ask which kind it was.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most toxic food for dogs in India?

Onion and garlic cause the most toxic ratings in our dataset: 64 of 147 foods. Garlic is 3 to 5 times more toxic than onion, according to the MSD Veterinary Manual. Grapes, raisins, xylitol and chocolate are also dangerous in small amounts.

Can dogs eat food cooked with onion and garlic?

No. Cooking, frying or drying does not remove the compounds that damage a dog's red blood cells. Set aside a plain portion before onion, garlic or masala goes into the pot.

Is a small amount of onion in dal okay for dogs?

It is not a safe habit. Damage can build up from repeated small doses, and signs may not appear for days. If a dog ate a large onion-rich meal once, call your vet.

Can dogs eat chapati with ghee or dal tadka?

Plain chapati and plain dal are usually fine in small amounts. Ghee adds fat, and tadka adds garlic, hing and chilli, which is where the risk is. Keep the dog's share plain.

How long after eating onion will a dog get sick?

The MSD Veterinary Manual says red blood cell damage begins within 24 hours. Anaemia typically shows 3 to 5 days after the meal, with weakness, pale gums and dark urine. Do not wait for signs before calling a vet.

Are raisins in kheer dangerous for dogs?

Yes. Raisins can cause sudden kidney failure in dogs, and the MSD Veterinary Manual gives a risk threshold of more than one grape or raisin per 4.5 kg of body weight. Kheer is also very high in sugar.

Is tamarind toxic to dogs?

The MSD Veterinary Manual reports kidney failure in dogs after tamarind, linked to the same tartaric acid suspected in grapes. Our pages rate plain tamarind caution and concentrated tamarind paste toxic. Keep imli chutney and puliyodarai away from dogs.

What should I do if my dog ate chocolate?

Call your vet straight away and say what kind of chocolate it was and roughly how much. Signs usually start within 6 to 12 hours. Dark and baking chocolate are far more dangerous than milk chocolate.

Methodology and limitations

This report uses the published verdicts on the 905 food safety pages on dogeats.in as of October 2026. 147 foods carry a toxic verdict. dogeats.in editors read each toxic page and assigned one main hazard, such as onion and garlic, chocolate, sugar or salt.

Hazard frequency across all foods is a keyword count on each page's quick answer, so a food can name several hazards. Cuisine and dish type were assigned by dogeats.in editors and are shared with our other /stats/ reports.

Signs, timing and dose figures come from the MSD Veterinary Manual (also published as the Merck Veterinary Manual) and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. We give dose figures only as reported by those sources and not as safe limits.

Limitations. Verdicts describe foods as typically prepared in India and are general guidance, not advice for a particular dog. Each toxic food has one main hazard here, although many dishes carry several. Keyword counts on short quick answers understate how often onion, garlic and salt appear in real recipes. Our ratings for a few foods, such as lemon, lime and avocado, are stricter than ASPCA guidance. Puppies, seniors and dogs with kidney, liver or blood conditions need extra care, so check with your vet.
