The Golden Retriever was developed in the Scottish Highlands to retrieve waterfowl across cold moorland, and the coat tells that story: long, dense and water-repellent. It is the single most significant fact for an Indian owner, because that coat does not come off for summer.

Golden Retriever Colours and the Fake Colour Warning
The standard recognises shades of gold, from light cream through to a deep lustrous gold. Very pale and very dark dogs are both still simply gold on paperwork, and coat shade has no bearing on health or temperament. The two standards differ at the edges. The UK-based FCI standard accepts any shade of gold or cream but not red or mahogany, while the AKC standard calls an extremely pale or extremely dark coat undesirable. So a very pale, almost white Golden is accepted under the FCI standard but undesirable under the AKC one, while a red Golden is excluded by the FCI. Listings selling "English" and "American" types are usually describing this difference, not two breeds.
Two marketing claims are worth ignoring in Indian listings. 'English cream' or 'platinum' Goldens are simply pale-coated dogs, often sold at a steep premium on the claim that they are healthier or live longer, which is not established. And there is no such thing as a black Golden Retriever: a black dog sold as one is another breed or a cross. Pay for health screening, not for coat shade.

❌ Myth: "Golden Retrievers and Labradors are basically the same dog"
✅ Reality: They share a friendly temperament and not much else practically. The Golden's coat is longer, denser and far more work, it handles Indian heat worse, it is softer and more sensitive to harsh handling. And it carries a substantially higher lifetime cancer risk.
❌ Myth: "A Golden Retriever cannot live in India because of the heat"
