American Eskimo Dog in India: Cost, Heat Risk & Care Guide
Quick verdict: A bright, loyal family dog for cooler Indian cities and owners who can brush a white double coat twice a week and live with a watchdog bark. The American Eskimo Dog is rare and expensive in India, it struggles in humid heat, and many puppies sold under the name are Japanese or Indian Spitz.
Also called Eskie, American Spitz (former name) · Checked against AKC and KCI breed standards
The American Eskimo Dog is a white spitz breed from the United States, descended from the German Spitz. It comes in three AKC sizes, toy (23 to 30 cm), miniature (30 to 38 cm) and standard (38 to 48 cm), and weighs about 3 to 16 kg. It lives 13 to 15 years. In India the key issues are heat, because of its thick stand-off double coat, and mis-selling, since it is often confused with the Japanese Spitz and Indian Spitz.

About the American Eskimo Dog Breed
Despite the name, the American Eskimo Dog has nothing to do with the Inuit. It descends from the white German Spitz dogs that German immigrants brought to the United States, where they worked as farm dogs and watchdogs. After the First World War the breed was renamed to sound less German, and it had been known as the American Spitz. Eskies then became well known as circus performers in the early twentieth century, thanks to their looks and their quickness to learn tricks.
The breed comes in three sizes, toy, miniature and standard, which the AKC treats as one breed with no preference between sizes. All three should be white, or white with biscuit cream, with black points on the nose, lips and eye rims and a richly plumed tail carried over the back. The AKC standard dates from 1994. The FCI does not list the breed, so outside the United States it is uncommon.
The AKC standard describes the temperament as intelligent, alert and friendly, slightly conservative with strangers, and an excellent watchdog that sounds a warning bark. In practice, Eskies are affectionate, playful and very attached to their families. They learn quickly, can be stubborn, and bark readily.
In India the breed is rare, and that creates two problems. Many puppies sold as American Eskimo Dogs are Japanese Spitz or Indian Spitz, which look very similar as puppies and cost far less. And the coat is a real heat problem in most Indian cities. Where the climate is mild and the owner is ready to brush, it can be a lovely family dog.
Which Indian Cities Suit a American Eskimo Dog Best?
✅ Easier climates
- Bengaluru and Pune, where the milder climate makes the coat manageable
- Shimla, Mussoorie, Darjeeling, Ooty and other hill towns, which suit a Nordic coat best
- Delhi, Chandigarh and Lucknow from October to March, with AC through summer
- Hyderabad, workable with indoor cooling and early and late walks
⚠️ Harder climates
- Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata, where heat and humidity combine for much of the year
- Coastal Kerala, Goa and Mangaluru, for the long, wet monsoon and damp undercoat
- Rajasthan and the north Indian plains in May and June without AC
- Homes where the dog would be kept outdoors or on a terrace
American Eskimo Dog Price in India: How Much Does One Cost?
The American Eskimo Dog price in India runs about Rs 45,000 to 75,000 for a pet-quality puppy and Rs 75,000 to 1.2 lakh for one with KCI or AKC papers and imported bloodlines. Show and imported dogs cost more than that. Expect Rs 4,000 to 8,000 a month, including grooming and summer cooling.
| What you are buying | Price in India |
|---|---|
| Pet-quality puppy, no papers Meet the mother and check vaccination and deworming records. Without papers, you cannot be sure it is an Eskie. | Rs 45,000 to 75,000 |
| Puppy with KCI or AKC papers Ask for both parents' registration certificates, which name the breed, plus PRA and hip results. | Rs 75,000 to 1.2 lakh |
| Show or imported Eskie Priced individually. Ask for the export pedigree and health tests. | Above Rs 1.2 lakh |
| Toy, miniature or standard size All three are one breed in the AKC standard. "Teacup" is not a size. | No fixed premium |
| Biscuit cream, or "rare" brown or grey Biscuit cream is standard. Brown, grey or black means a cross or another breed. | Pay no premium |
| Japanese or Indian Spitz sold as an Eskie Japanese Spitz pets sell for about Rs 15,000 to 35,000 and Indian Spitz for less. Check papers. | Often priced as an Eskie |
| Male or female Sex has no bearing on Eskie quality, so a male priced well above a female, or the reverse, reflects demand. | Usually the same |
| Puppy advertised under Rs 20,000 Almost certainly another spitz, a cross, or an advance-payment scam. | Far below Rs 45,000 |

Prices in Mumbai and Delhi typically run 15 to 30 percent above smaller cities, a pattern Supertails reports across breeds. Supertails does not include the American Eskimo Dog in its March 2026 price list. So these ranges come from its separate September 2025 breed guide, which itself gives inconsistent overall figures. Treat them as approximate.
The breed is rare in India and is not an FCI breed, so registration papers and the parents matter more than usual. Most white spitz puppies for sale here are Indian Spitz or Japanese Spitz. Ask to see both parents' papers, meet the mother, and never send an advance for a puppy you have only seen in photos.
What Health Problems Are Common in the American Eskimo Dog?
| Condition | What owners should know |
|---|---|
| Heatstroke | The biggest risk in India. A thick white double coat in tropical heat. Heavy panting, dark red gums, drooling or wobbling means cool the dog with room-temperature water and go to a vet now. |
| Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) | An inherited breakdown of the retina that leads to blindness, often starting with poor night vision. Ask whether the parents had an eye examination and a PRA DNA test. |
| Hip dysplasia | Reported in the breed, more relevant in standard-sized dogs. Ask for parent hip scores and keep the dog lean. |
| Patellar luxation | A slipping kneecap, more common in the toy and miniature sizes. Intermittent skipping or holding up a back leg needs a vet check. |
| Epilepsy | PetMD lists the breed at higher risk than average. Seizures need a vet assessment, and a seizure lasting over five minutes is an emergency. |
| Dental disease | Common in small spitz breeds. Brush teeth several times a week from puppyhood and plan for dental cleaning. |
| Low blood sugar in toy puppies | Very small toy puppies are prone to hypoglycaemia. Feed small, frequent meals, and treat weakness, trembling or collapse as an emergency. |
| Hot spots and skin infections | Common in Indian humidity, because the dense undercoat stays damp after wet walks and baths. Dry to the skin and brush out dead undercoat. |
- • A seizure lasting over two minutes, or several in a day
- • Heavy panting with bright red gums after heat exposure
- • High fever, lethargy or pale gums after a tick bite
- • Staggering, collapse or weakness during or after exercise

American Eskimo Dog Grooming in Indian Conditions
The Eskie coat is a stand-off double coat: a short, dense undercoat with longer, straight guard hair growing through it, a thick ruff around the neck and plumed breeches and tail. It sheds steadily and heavily, with bigger seasonal blow-outs. Brush at least twice a week with a slicker brush, an undercoat rake and a metal comb, working down to the skin, and daily during a blow-out. The ruff, behind the ears and the breeches are where mats start.
Never shave an American Eskimo Dog for Indian summer. The coat insulates against heat as well as cold and shields pink or grey skin from sun, and spitz coats can regrow patchy or not at all after clipping. Remove loose undercoat with a rake and cool the room instead. A neat trim of the feet is all the coat needs.
The white coat is easier to keep clean than it looks, because dried mud brushes out. Bathe every 6 to 8 weeks, dry fully with a blower, especially in the monsoon, and wipe tear stains daily. Trim nails every few weeks and brush the teeth several times a week.
A coat that stays damp is where skin trouble starts, so the monsoon dog care guide covers drying, ticks and feeding in the rains.
How Much Exercise Does a American Eskimo Dog Need?
An adult Eskie needs about 45 to 60 minutes of activity a day, split between walks, play and training. Toy dogs need less and standards more, but all three sizes are lively and clever, and a bored Eskie barks, digs and chews. Fetch, trick training, scent games and agility suit the breed, which was once a circus performer.
In India, plan exercise around the heat. In summer, walk before 7am and after sunset, keep midday play indoors in a cool room, and stop at the first sign of heavy panting. Carry water on every walk. In humid coastal cities, even the evening walk may need to be shorter, with indoor games making up the rest.
Eskies are alert and quick, and many will chase cats, squirrels and scooters. Use a well-fitted harness and keep the dog on lead near roads. Puppies of all sizes should have short, gentle play sessions rather than long walks until their joints mature.
For safe walking times and warning signs in an Indian summer, see the heatstroke prevention guide.
Training a American Eskimo Dog: Common Indian Problems
American Eskimo Dogs learn quickly and enjoy working for rewards, which is why they did so well in circus acts. The AKC standard calls them eager to please, and in practice they respond best to short, varied, reward-based sessions. They can be stubborn and they get bored with repetition, so keep training fun and stop while the dog still wants more.
Barking is the main training job. The breed is a natural watchdog that sounds a warning at visitors, the lift, the doorbell and noises in the corridor. Teach a quiet cue and a settle spot away from the door from the first weeks. Daily exercise and mental work reduce barking a great deal, which matters in Indian housing societies.
Socialise the puppy early with household staff, delivery workers, children and other dogs, because Eskies can be reserved with strangers. Get the puppy used to being brushed, having its feet handled and its teeth cleaned, since the coat and teeth need lifelong care. Toy-sized puppies should be handled gently by children and taught not to jump from furniture.
Feeding a American Eskimo Dog in India
Portion by size, because a toy Eskie may need a third of what a standard eats. Feed a complete small or medium breed diet in two measured meals, and three or four small meals for toy puppies, which are prone to low blood sugar. The thick coat hides weight gain, so check by feel for ribs. Appetite often drops in Indian summer, and fresh water must always be available.
Before sharing any household food, check it against the dog food toxicity chart for India, and measure meals with the katori portion guide.

American Eskimo Dog Colours and the Fake Colour Warning
The AKC standard allows only two colours: pure white, which is preferred, and white with biscuit cream, where the cream usually shows on the ears or as light shading. Any other colour is a disqualification. Black points on the nose, lips and eye rims are part of the look, and blue eyes are a disqualification too. The skin underneath is pink or grey.
That means a brown American Eskimo Dog is not a standard colour. A puppy with brown, tan, grey, black or orange patches sold as an Eskie is usually a cross or another spitz breed, such as a German Spitz or Pomeranian. A cream or biscuit-shaded puppy can be real, but it is not a rarer variety and should not cost more. In India, the bigger colour problem is the opposite one: a white spitz puppy is easy to sell under any name. So a white Japanese Spitz or Indian Spitz is often passed off as an Eskie at a much higher price. Check the parents, not the coat colour.
Buying a American Eskimo Dog Safely in India: Red Flags
- A white spitz puppy sold as an American Eskimo Dog with no papers, when Japanese Spitz and Indian Spitz puppies look almost the same.
- "Rare" brown, black, grey or blue-eyed Eskies at a premium. Only white or white with biscuit cream is standard.
- A seller who cannot say whether the puppy is toy, miniature or standard, or show you adult parents.
- No PRA DNA test or eye examination on the parents.
- A breeder who suggests shaving the coat for summer.
- Puppies sold under 8 weeks or delivered by courier without you meeting the mother.
- Requests for an advance payment for a puppy you have only seen in photos or videos.
Before buying a American Eskimo Dog, ask your local SPCA, CUPA, Friendicoes or a city rescue network whether one needs a home. For the first months at home, the puppy feeding guide sets out meals by age.
American Eskimo Dog Papers, Breed Clubs and Rescue
The Kennel Club of India is the national registry and follows FCI standards. Ask to see the registration certificate itself, and check that the parents listed match the dogs you met. The AKC breed standard is the most accessible English description of a correct American Eskimo Dog.

3 Myths About American Eskimo Dogs in India
❌ Myth: "The American Eskimo Dog is an Arctic sled dog from the Inuit"
✅ Reality: It is a German spitz breed renamed in the United States after the First World War. The name is marketing history, not ancestry. It still has a thick Nordic coat, though, so the heat risk is real.
❌ Myth: "Any white fluffy spitz puppy is an American Eskimo Dog"
✅ Reality: In India, most white spitz puppies are Indian Spitz or Japanese Spitz, and the puppies look nearly identical. Only papers and adult parents tell you what you are buying.
❌ Myth: "Shaving the coat makes an Eskie comfortable in Indian summer"
✅ Reality: The coat insulates against heat and shields pale skin from sun, and spitz coats can regrow patchy after clipping. Raking out dead undercoat, AC or a cooler and early walks work better.
Editorial Note
"An American Eskimo Dog is a charming, clever companion, but in India it is rare, often mis-sold and hard in the heat. If you love the look and live in a hot city, the Indian Spitz gives you a similar white spitz that is far better suited to the climate."
