Which seasonal fruits can dogs eat in India?

Most common Indian fruits are safe or safe with care. Of 68 fruits on dogeats.in, 27 are rated safe, 33 need caution and 8 are toxic. Mango, guava, jamun, papaya, banana and watermelon are all safe when served plain.

Caution usually means one of three things. The fruit is very sour, like kokum and raw mango, very sugary, like chikoo and dates, or has a pit or seed that must come out, like lychee and plum.

The toxic list is short but includes some familiar names: avocado, cherries, elderberry, grapes, lemon, lime, raisins and star fruit. Grapes and raisins are the most serious because even small amounts can cause kidney failure.

Fruit by month

Fruit choice peaks in the pre-monsoon summer. May has the most seasonal fruits in our calendar (17), and June has the most safe ones (11). September is the leanest month, with 7 seasonal fruits, though year-round fruits fill the gap.

The months below are typical market seasons for north and central Indian cities. They shift by a few weeks across states and years. South India often gets mango and jackfruit earlier, and hill fruits such as apricot and cherries reach plains markets only briefly.

Summer fruits, March to May

Summer is the best season for dog-safe fruit. 11 of the 21 fruits in market at some point from March to May are rated safe, including mango, watermelon, muskmelon, ripe jackfruit, phalsa, tadgola and mulberry.

Mango is the star, and TNAU puts the mango harvest from March to June. Serve peeled, pitted flesh only. The stone is a choking and blockage risk, and aamras, pickle and kulfi are not safe.

Watermelon, muskmelon and tadgola are good for hydration in the heat. Lychee arrives in May and June, but our page rates it caution: serve only a little peeled, seeded flesh. Cut fruit spoils fast at 40°C, so serve it fresh.

Monsoon fruits, June to September

The monsoon brings 24 seasonal fruits in our calendar, and 16 are safe. Jamun is the signature fruit, ripening from June to August; TNAU gives June and July for most varieties.

Jamun flesh is safe, but the seed is a choking risk, so serve it pitted. Plum, peach and pear arrive from the hills. Plum is caution because its pit holds cyanide-forming compounds.

Humidity is the bigger monsoon risk. Cut fruit grows mould and bacteria quickly in damp kitchens, so serve it within the hour and discard anything soft or fermented.

Winter fruits, October to February

Post-monsoon and winter markets bring 18 seasonal fruits in our calendar. Guava, amla, ber and strawberry are safe, while orange and tangerine need caution because of their acidity.

Guava has two crops, a rainy-season crop and a winter crop, according to TNAU. Serve guava peeled and in small pieces. Ber, the Indian jujube, appears from January to March and is safe once the stone is removed.

Winter is also when the toxic fruits appear. Star fruit is in season from October to January and grapes from January to April. Grapes are widely sold in late winter, so keep the bowl out of reach.

The MSD Veterinary Manual says more than one grape or raisin per 4.5 kg of body weight may be enough to risk kidney injury. If your dog eats grapes, call a vet the same day.

Frequently asked questions

Which fruits can dogs eat in Indian summer?

Mango, watermelon, muskmelon, ripe jackfruit, phalsa and tadgola are all safe when served plain. Peel them and remove every pit and seed. Lychee needs caution, so give only a little peeled, seeded flesh.

Can dogs eat mango?

Yes, peeled and pitted mango flesh is safe in small amounts. The stone is a choking and blockage risk, and the skin is hard to digest. Aamras, mango pickle and mango kulfi are not safe.

Is jamun safe for dogs?

Yes, jamun flesh is safe in small amounts during its June to August season. Remove the seed first, because it is a choking risk. Rinse it well before serving.

Can dogs eat guava in winter?

Yes, guava is safe for dogs. Serve it peeled, in small pieces, and in moderation because it is high in fibre. Winter guava is widely available from November to February.

Which fruits are toxic to dogs in India?

Our 8 toxic fruits are avocado, cherries, elderberry, grapes, lemon, lime, raisins and star fruit. Grapes and raisins are the most dangerous because they can cause kidney failure. Keep winter grapes and festival raisins out of reach.

Can dogs eat oranges and kinnow?

In very small amounts only. Our pages rate orange and tangerine caution because of their acidity, while lemon and lime are rated toxic. ASPCA describes small amounts of citrus as usually causing only mild stomach upset.

How much fruit can I give my dog?

Keep fruit to a small treat, around 10% of daily calories, and start with a piece or two. Watch for loose stools over the next day. Ask your vet first if your dog is diabetic or overweight.

Are these fruit seasons the same across India?

No. The months are typical market seasons for north and central Indian cities, and they shift by a few weeks between states and years. Mango, for example, ripens earlier in the south than in Uttar Pradesh.

Methodology and limitations

Safety verdicts come from the 68 fruit pages on dogeats.in as of October 2026. dogeats.in editors identified these fruits from all 905 food pages, because the site's fruits section also contains dishes.

Each fruit was given a typical market season for north and central Indian cities. For mango, jackfruit, guava, phalsa and plum we used harvest months from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) Agritech portal. For litchi we used ICAR-NRCL's statement that fruits mature in May and June. Jamun and ber use the months on our own food pages.

The remaining seasons are dogeats.in estimates of typical market availability, marked as such in the full table. Season groups follow the India Meteorological Department's four seasons: winter (January and February), pre-monsoon (March to May), monsoon (June to September) and post-monsoon (October to December).

Search volumes are Ubersuggest monthly estimates for India for 'can dogs eat' plus the fruit name, exported in August 2026, with spelling variants combined.

Limitations. Fruit seasons vary by state, variety and year, and cold storage and imports stretch many of them. Most season months are editorial estimates rather than official arrival data. Verdicts are general guidance for healthy adult dogs eating plain fruit, not advice for a particular dog. Search volumes are third-party estimates and do not show seasonal swings. Some ratings, such as lemon and lime, are stricter than ASPCA guidance.
