Our answers for the top two are on the mango and papaya pages. Every question in the table that matches a food page links to its verdict on our site, 141 pages in all.

Fruit leads by a wide margin

Fruit questions make up 42.4% of food searches, across 60 questions. Vegetables are next at 19.3% and nuts and seeds at 11.0%.

Dairy, sweets, grains and meat each sit between 5% and 8%. Spices, herbs and oils are smallest at 2.4%. Questions about meat and eggs are rare, perhaps because owners already treat cooked chicken and eggs as normal dog food.

The fruit tilt fits Indian homes. Mango, papaya, guava and jackfruit are cheap in season and often shared from the family plate. Our seasonal fruits calendar maps each fruit to the months it peaks.

Just under half of searches are about safe foods

We matched 178 questions to a dogeats.in food page, covering 92.6% of food searches. Of those searches, 48.1% are about foods we rate safe, 40.5% about caution foods and 11.4% about toxic foods.

Sweets, chocolate and snacks are the riskiest group: not one searched item is rated safe. Dairy is next, with only 13.1% of dairy searches on a safe food. In nuts and seeds, 78.4% of searches land on a caution or toxic food, mostly because of fat.

Caution does not mean forbidden. It usually means plain, small and occasional, with no salt, sugar or masala. Ask your vet before adding anything regular to your dog's diet.

Which toxic foods do Indians ask about most?

Chocolate leads, at 1,000 searches a month. Grapes follow at 880 and ice cream at 850 across plain, vanilla and strawberry variants. Toxic foods draw 5,420 searches a month in all, 11.4% of matched searches.

Several of these are everyday Indian kitchen risks. Onion and garlic go into most curries, raisins (kishmish) go into halwa and kheer, and neem leaves are used at home as a remedy. A dog does not need to eat the plain ingredient to be exposed.

If your dog has eaten any of these, call your vet straight away and say what was eaten and roughly how much. Do not try to make the dog vomit unless a vet tells you to.

Sources differ on two items. The ASPCA lists avocado mainly as a danger to birds, rabbits and livestock, and citrus fruit flesh as usually causing only mild stomach upset. Our pages rate avocado, lemon and lime toxic, so treat them as foods to avoid and check with your vet.

Our chocolate page explains why theobromine is the problem, and the ice cream page covers sugar-free brands that may contain xylitol. For the full ranking by risk, see the most toxic foods in an Indian kitchen.

Indian foods and Indian names

Most questions are about foods eaten everywhere, but Indian foods are a solid minority. Questions that use an Indian food or Indian name add up to 7,850 searches a month, or 15.3% of food searches, across 63 questions.

The top Indian questions are about makhana, paneer, soya chunks and muskmelon, each at 480 a month. Jamun and jaggery follow at 390, then ice apple (tadgola) and ghee at 320. Most of these are caution foods because of fat or sugar.

Names matter too. 'Lady finger' gets 260 searches against 100 for 'okra'. 'Brinjal' and 'capsicum' get 260 each, and their American names do not appear in the India data at all.

The Hindi name does not always win. 'Cashews' (720) beats 'kaju' (110), 'dates' (880) beats 'khajur' (30) and 'raisins' (140) beats 'kishmish' (50). For dry fruits, English names dominate search.

Our makhana page is the best rated of these: plain roasted makhana is safe in small amounts. Peanuts, at 1,300 searches, are the most searched caution food, safe only plain, unsalted and in very small numbers.

Questions with no single answer page

Some searches ask about a group or a part of a food, not one food. Those questions add up to 3,820 searches a month. The largest are 'can dogs eat fish' (590), 'fruits' (390) and 'vegetables' (320).

Others ask about a specific part, such as mango skin, guava seeds or watermelon rind. These matter because the part can be riskier than the fruit. Mango flesh is safe, but the pit can block the gut.

A further 730 searches are not food questions at all. Examples are 'can dogs eat grass' (90) and 'can dogs eat cat food' (320). We left them out of the food shares.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most searched dog food question in India?

'Can dogs eat mango' is the top question, at 2,400 searches a month in Ubersuggest's India data. Pineapple and papaya follow at 1,900 each. Mango flesh is safe in small amounts once the pit and skin are removed.

Can dogs eat mango in India's summer?

Yes, in moderation. Give small pieces of ripe mango flesh only, with no skin and no pit. Mango is sugary, so keep it to an occasional treat and skip it for diabetic dogs.

Which toxic food do Indians ask about most?

Chocolate, at 1,000 searches a month. Grapes (880) and ice cream (850 across three variants) come next. If your dog has eaten chocolate, call your vet straight away.

What share of dog food searches are about toxic foods?

11.4% of the searches we matched to a food page are about a food we rate toxic, about 5,420 searches a month. 48.1% are about safe foods and 40.5% about caution foods.

Can dogs eat peanuts?

With caution. Plain, unsalted peanuts are safe only in very small numbers, because they are high in fat. Never give salted, masala or shelled peanuts. 'Can dogs eat peanuts' gets 1,300 searches a month in India.

Can dogs eat makhana?

Yes, plain roasted makhana without salt or masala is a safe, light treat in small amounts. It is the most searched Indian-named food in the data, at 480 searches a month plus 90 for 'fox nuts'.

Is avocado really toxic to dogs?

Sources differ. The ASPCA says avocado is mainly dangerous to birds, rabbits and livestock. Our page rates it toxic because of persin and the pit's blockage risk, so we advise avoiding it and asking your vet.

Where does this search data come from?

From Ubersuggest's India keyword database, exported by dogeats.in in October 2026. It holds 339 'can dogs eat' keywords, 226 with any listed searches. Volumes are estimates of average monthly Google searches.

Methodology and limitations

Search volumes come from an Ubersuggest export of 339 India keywords starting 'can dogs eat' or 'can dogs have', pulled by dogeats.in in October 2026. We kept the 226 keywords with a listed volume above zero.

Each keyword was matched by hand to one dogeats.in food page where the question and the page cover the same food. Spelling and language variants were merged, for example litchi with lychee and kaju with cashews. Questions about a part of a food, such as mango skin, or about a broad group were left unmatched. 178 questions were matched, covering 92.6% of food searches.

Verdicts (safe, caution, toxic) are the dogeats.in verdicts on each food page. They are general guidance, not veterinary advice for a specific dog. Food types and the 'Indian food or Indian name' group were assigned by dogeats.in editors.

Six questions are not about a food for dogs: the bare 'can dogs eat', plus grass, cat food, lizards, insects and humans. Worth 730 searches, they are left out of food shares but kept in the overall total.

Limitations. Ubersuggest volumes are modelled estimates of Google searches, shown in fixed bands, and small numbers such as 10 or 20 are rough. The export only covers questions phrased as 'can dogs eat', so searches like 'is mango good for dogs' or Hindi-script queries are missing. Volumes for spelling variants were added together, which may slightly overcount where the tool has already grouped them. Our verdicts sometimes differ from other sources, as with avocado and citrus, and the Indian food grouping is an editorial judgement.
