Restricted dog breeds in India: what each one costs, and how much legal risk comes with it
Six breeds we cover were named in the Centre's 2024 list, and their median pet-quality puppy costs Rs 56,250, about 1.9 times the Rs 30,000 median across our 58 breeds. The cheapest of them, the Pit Bull and Rottweiler, carry the most legal risk, named in 9 official instruments each. The Dogo Argentino is the dearest at about Rs 1 lakh and is barred for new owners in Chandigarh and Ghaziabad.

Key findings
- Six of our 58 breed guides match a breed named in the Centre's 2024 list: Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Cane Corso, Kangal and Rhodesian Ridgeback.
- Their median pet-quality puppy price is Rs 56,250, against Rs 30,000 for all 58 breeds we track.
- For KCI-registered puppies the gap is similar: Rs 1.02 lakh for the six listed breeds against Rs 55,000 overall.
- The Rottweiler (Rs 26,500 midpoint) and Pit Bull (Rs 30,000) are the cheapest listed breeds and the most restricted, each named in 9 instruments.
- The Dogo Argentino has the highest midpoint puppy price of all 58 breeds we track, tied with the Samoyed at Rs 1 lakh.
- Four breeds sit in our highest legal-risk tier because a local rule against them is in force: Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino and Cane Corso.
- The Bull Terrier, Bullmastiff and German Shepherd were not on the central list but are named in a local rule, in Chandigarh or Delhi Cantonment.
- Five of the six centrally listed breeds score 1 out of 5 on our beginner-friendly rating; the Rhodesian Ridgeback scores 2.
- Adding 12 months of running costs, a first year with a Kangal costs about Rs 2.1 lakh and with a Pit Bull about Rs 1.11 lakh.
How much do restricted dog breeds cost in India?
Breeds on India's restricted lists cost more than the typical pet dog. The six centrally listed breeds we cover have a median pet-quality puppy price of Rs 56,250. The median across all 58 breeds in our guides is Rs 30,000.
The spread inside the group is wide. A Rottweiler puppy has a midpoint of Rs 26,500, while a Dogo Argentino sits at Rs 1 lakh, the joint highest of any breed we track. The Kangal and Tibetan Mastiff both sit at Rs 75,000.
The figures are midpoints of the price ranges in our breed guides. Real quotes vary by city, lineage and season, and a very low price for a guarding breed is a warning sign about how the puppy was bred.

Legal risk by breed
No breed is banned across India as of October 2026. The Centre's 12 March 2024 letter naming 23 breeds was quashed by the Karnataka High Court and set aside by the Delhi High Court. In January 2025 the Centre told the Bombay High Court it was not acting on it.
Legal risk today comes from local rules. We sorted 13 breeds into four tiers by what names them. The highest tier is a breed on the central list that a local rule in force also names.
We counted only rules that name the breed. The central list also has two open-ended lines, "Terriers" and "Mastiffs (boerbulls)", which no authority has defined. Breeds covered only by those words sit in the lowest tier.
Central letter 2024, municipal rules (Ghaziabad, Kanpur, Panchkula, Chandigarh), Delhi Cantonment Army circular, Faridkot DC order, Gurugram consumer order (stayed by the HC) and Goa draft notice. Sources in the banned breeds tracker.

Local rules we treat as in force are Chandigarh's 2025 bye-laws, Ghaziabad's 2022 rules, the Kanpur and Panchkula resolutions of 2022 and the Delhi Cantonment Army circular. Goa's list is still a draft, and the Gurugram consumer order was stayed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Price and legal risk for every restricted breed, side by side
The table joins our price data with the legal record. "Instruments" counts every official document that names the breed, including drafts and stayed orders. "In force" counts only the local rules that currently apply.
Running cost is our monthly estimate for food, grooming, vet care and basics. First-year cost adds 12 months of running cost to the pet-quality puppy price. Both are midpoints of ranges, so treat them as estimates.

Read across a row and the trade-offs show. A Bull Terrier costs about Rs 35,000 as a puppy and is named in only one rule, but that rule bars new owners in Chandigarh. A Kangal costs more than twice as much and no local rule known to be in force names it.
The first-year bill
The puppy price is the smaller part of the bill for a large guarding dog. Twelve months of running costs add Rs 1.35 lakh for a Kangal and Rs 81,000 for a Pit Bull at our midpoints.
Among the six centrally listed breeds, the first year runs from about Rs 1.11 lakh for a Pit Bull to Rs 2.26 lakh for a Dogo Argentino. These breeds weigh 14 to 61 kg as adults, and food is the largest monthly line.
Legal costs sit outside these numbers. Where a city refuses registration, an owner may face seizure, a fine or the cost of moving the dog. Bite liability can exceed the price of the dog.

Should you buy a Pit Bull, Rottweiler or Cane Corso in India?
Start with your address, not the breeder. If you live in Chandigarh, Ghaziabad, Kanpur or Panchkula, a new dog of a named breed may not be registrable at all. Goa may join that list once its draft notification is final.
Then check your society and lease. Under the Animal Welfare Board of India's pet circular, societies cannot ban pets by breed or size. Landlords can still refuse, and many do for these breeds.
Finally, be honest about experience. Our guides rate five of the six centrally listed breeds 1 out of 5 for beginners. Most legal trouble with these dogs starts with a bite, and most bites start with a dog its owner could not handle.

- Ask your municipal veterinary office whether the breed can be registered in your ward before you pay a deposit.
- Get the breeder's KCI papers and the parents' temperament history in writing.
- Budget for a professional trainer in the first year; it is cheaper than a single bite claim.
- Keep the dog leashed in every common area and carry vaccination proof when you walk.

Frequently asked questions
What is the price of a Pitbull in India in 2026?
Our guide puts a pet-quality Pit Bull puppy at Rs 20,000 to Rs 40,000 and a KCI-registered puppy at Rs 40,000 to Rs 80,000. Running costs add about Rs 4,500 to Rs 9,000 a month. Check whether your city registers the breed before buying.
Is it legal to buy a Rottweiler in India?
Yes in most places, because no national ban is in force. Chandigarh, Ghaziabad, Kanpur and Panchkula restrict new Rottweilers, and the Army bars them in Delhi Cantonment community areas. A pet-quality puppy costs Rs 18,000 to Rs 35,000 in our guide.
Why is the Dogo Argentino so expensive in India?
Pet-quality puppies cost Rs 80,000 to Rs 1.2 lakh in our guide, and imported dogs go up to about Rs 3 lakh. It is also on the 2024 central list and barred for new owners in Chandigarh and Ghaziabad. That limits who can legally keep one.
Is the Bull Terrier banned in India?
It was not named in the Centre's 2024 list, though the list has an undefined line for "Terriers". Chandigarh's 2025 bye-laws bar new Bull Terriers. Elsewhere it can be registered as normal.
Is the Tibetan Mastiff on the banned list?
Not by name. The 2024 list has a line for "Mastiffs (boerbulls)" that some read broadly, but no rule we found names the Tibetan Mastiff. Its bigger problem in India is heat; it scores 1 out of 5 on our heat rating.
Which restricted breed is cheapest to keep?
Among the six centrally listed breeds, the Pit Bull has the lowest running cost in our data, about Rs 4,500 to Rs 9,000 a month. Its estimated first-year cost is about Rs 1.11 lakh. It is also the breed most often named in local rules.
Do restricted breeds cost more than other dogs?
Yes, on average. The six centrally listed breeds we cover have a median pet-quality puppy price of Rs 56,250, against Rs 30,000 across all 58 breeds in our guides. KCI-registered puppies show a similar gap.
Methodology and limitations
Puppy price ranges and monthly running costs are compiled by dogeats.in from breeder and marketplace listings for our breed guides, October 2026. We use the midpoint of each range. First-year cost is the pet-quality midpoint plus 12 times the monthly running-cost midpoint.
Legal status comes from the court orders and local instruments documented in our banned dog breeds tracker. We matched breed names exactly. "Pitbull Terrier" in the central list maps to our Pit Bull guide, and generic words such as "Terriers" were not treated as naming a breed.
The four legal-risk tiers are a dogeats.in editorial classification based only on which instruments name a breed and whether they are in force. Suitability scores are dogeats.in editorial ratings from 1 to 5.
