24 hour government and veterinary college hospitals in India: which ones stay open at night, city by city
We checked the official pages of 10 government and veterinary college hospitals in Indian cities in October 2026. Four state emergency care around the clock: Madras Veterinary College in Chennai, the Namakkal college, IVRI near Bareilly and the Bikaner college. GADVASU in Ludhiana lists a 24-hour emergency service but publishes no night hours or staffing, so we have not counted it. The other five close between 4 PM and 10 PM. None of the hospitals we checked in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Delhi is confirmed open all night.

Key findings
- Of 10 public vet hospitals in Indian cities whose official pages we checked in October 2026, 4 confirm round-the-clock emergency care.
- Madras Veterinary College in Chennai runs its OPD from 8 AM to 1 PM on weekdays. Its emergency unit covers 1 PM to 8 AM, so a pet can be seen at any hour.
- The Chennai emergency and critical care unit receives about 10,000 cases a year, and the whole teaching hospital more than 1 lakh.
- TANUVAS says emergency services for large and small animals run round the clock at both Madras Veterinary College and the Namakkal veterinary college.
- IVRI's teaching hospital at Izatnagar, Bareilly, says it provides 24/7 emergency animal health services, and RAJUVAS says its Bikaner clinics run round the clock.
- GADVASU Ludhiana lists a 24-hour emergency service on its facilities page but gives no night hours or staffing, so we did not count it as 24-hour.
- The Hebbal vet college hospital in Bengaluru runs an evening clinic until 9 PM, and KVASU Mannuthy in Thrissur until 10 PM.
- At the Rajendranagar vet college hospital in Hyderabad, emergency treatment ends at 4 PM, and the BASU hospital in Patna lists an emergency slot of 2 PM to 8 PM.
- Delhi's Animal Husbandry Unit lists a 24-hour animal care helpline, 011-23967555, but no government vet hospital page we found states 24-hour hours.
- Delhi's government network had 48 vet hospitals and 27 dispensaries in 2024-25, and its 11 planned 24 x 7 district polyclinics were still capital plans.
Which government vet hospitals in India are open 24 hours?
Four of the 10 public vet hospitals we checked state emergency care around the clock on their official pages. They are Madras Veterinary College in Chennai, the Veterinary College and Research Institute in Namakkal, IVRI at Izatnagar near Bareilly and the Bikaner veterinary college. All four are veterinary college teaching hospitals, not ordinary government dispensaries. GADVASU in Ludhiana lists a 24-hour emergency service but publishes no night hours or night staffing, so we list it separately as not confirmed.
We counted a hospital only if its own website, or its university's, says the service runs round the clock or gives hours that cover all 24. Nothing on its pages may suggest the night is covered only by a doctor on call. Listings on directory and booking sites did not count. We read every page on 16 or 17 October 2026 and re-checked them on 18 October. Hours change, so call before you travel at night.
India's wider public vet network is built for livestock and runs mostly by day. Our report on vets per lakh population in India sets out how thin that network is for pets.

Five cities with big pet populations have no hospital on this list that we could confirm as open all night: Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi, Patna and Thrissur. Ludhiana's college lists 24-hour emergency care without night details. In those cities, confirm a clinic's night hours by phone before you set out.
Is Madras Veterinary College hospital in Chennai open 24 hours?
Yes. The Madras Veterinary College teaching hospital runs its OPD from 8 AM to 1 PM on weekdays. Its Emergency and Critical Care Unit takes over from 1 PM to 8 AM, so the two together cover all 24 hours.
On Saturdays, Sundays and government holidays the OPD runs from 8 AM to 11.30 AM and the emergency unit from 11.30 AM to 8 AM. TANUVAS says the unit handles surgical, obstetric and medical emergencies, keeps sick animals as inpatients and receives about 10,000 cases a year.
The teaching hospital as a whole treats more than 1 lakh cases a year, according to its Department of Clinics. That load is a reason to expect a wait at night for anything short of a crisis.

Official hospital pages (TANUVAS, KVASU, PVNRTVU, BASU) checked October 2026; Anand from the Kamdhenu University VCC report (data to 2020-21). Hyderabad's page does not say whether its 40,000 is a yearly figure. Figures are the minimum stated.

In Tamil Nadu, TANUVAS also lists round-the-clock emergency services at the Veterinary College and Research Institute in Namakkal. Its pages for the Salem, Tirunelveli and Orathanadu college hospitals that we read did not state 24-hour service.
Which vet college hospitals close in the evening?
Five of the 10 public hospitals we checked close between 4 PM and 10 PM. The latest is the KVASU evening clinic at Mannuthy in Thrissur, open 4 PM to 10 PM on working days and 1 PM to 9 PM on holidays.
In Bengaluru, the Hebbal veterinary college hospital runs an evening clinic from 1.30 PM to 9 PM. In Patna, the BASU hospital lists an emergency slot from 2 PM to 8 PM. The NDMC Veterinary Hospital in New Delhi runs its OPD in two shifts from 8 AM to 8 PM. On Sundays and holidays it is open 9 AM to 12 noon for emergencies only, and it has no indoor ward.
Hyderabad closes earliest. At the PVNRTVU Veterinary Clinical Complex in Rajendranagar the OPD runs from 9 AM to 12 noon, and emergency treatment is available only until 4 PM.
| City | Hospital | Sunday and holiday hours as published |
|---|---|---|
| Chennai | Madras Veterinary College | OPD 8 AM to 11.30 AM; emergency unit 11.30 AM to 8 AM |
| Ludhiana | GADVASU | Small animal OPD 9.30 AM to 12.30 PM on all days including holidays |
| Thrissur (Mannuthy) | KVASU | Day OPD 9 AM to 11.30 AM; evening clinic 1 PM to 9 PM |
| Hyderabad (Rajendranagar) | PVNRTVU | OPD 9 AM to 12 noon on working days and public holidays |
| New Delhi | NDMC Veterinary Hospital | 9 AM to 12 noon, emergency only |
| Patna | BASU | Services on 365 days a year; OPD 9 AM to 1 PM, emergency 2 to 8 PM |
Busy does not mean open late. KVASU Mannuthy sees 120 to 150 cases a day and more than 50,000 a year, yet still closes at 10 PM. The Anand college hospital in Gujarat treats more than 18,000 cases a year with an OPD of about 65 cases a working day, and its report gives no night hours.
Sundays are harder still. The NDMC hospital in New Delhi sees only emergencies on Sundays and holidays, from 9 AM to 12 noon. KVASU Mannuthy keeps its evening clinic open on holidays from 1 PM to 9 PM.
Is there a 24 hour government vet hospital in Delhi?
Not one we could confirm. Delhi's Animal Husbandry Unit lists a 24-hour animal care helpline, 011-23967555, on its district pages, but none of its official pages that we read states 24-hour hours for a hospital.
In January 2019, Medical Dialogues reported the Delhi government's hospital at Tis Hazari as the city's first 24x7 government vet hospital. It described three shifts (8 AM to 2 PM, 2 PM to 8 PM and 8 PM to 8 AM), five doctors and four support staff. We found no current official page confirming those shifts in 2026, so we have left Tis Hazari out of the table.
The NDMC Veterinary Hospital, run by the New Delhi Municipal Council, publishes OPD hours of 8 AM to 8 PM. Call the helpline first at night and ask which hospital is staffed.
Delhi's own figures show how large the daytime network is. The Development Department's 2025-26 write-up lists 48 veterinary hospitals, including one polyclinic, 27 dispensaries, 1 laboratory and 5 mobile ambulatory clinics in 2024-25. They treated 5,38,458 sick animals that year, against a target of 6 lakh.

- Delhi 24-hour animal care helpline: 011-23967555 (listed by the Delhi Animal Husbandry Unit, checked 16 October 2026).
- NDMC Veterinary Hospital, New Delhi: OPD 8 AM to 8 PM; phone 24672161 as shown on the NDMC page.
- Tis Hazari government vet hospital: reported 24x7 in January 2019; current night hours not confirmed on an official page.
Development Department, GNCT of Delhi, write-up 2025-26 (Annexure I). Hospitals include one polyclinic; 3 of the 5 mobile clinics were provided by the Government of India.

For dogs, 1962 is not a reliable night line in Delhi. Our 1962 mobile veterinary units report explains why the scheme serves livestock first.
The same document still lists one polyclinic in each of Delhi's 11 districts, with specialised and 24 x 7 emergency services, as planned capital work. Capital spending on the scheme was Rs 177.62 lakh in 2024-25, against a budget estimate of Rs 889 lakh.
How much does a government vet hospital charge for a dog?
Far less than a private clinic, though dogs pay more than cattle. The Bihar Animal Sciences University hospital in Patna charges Rs 200 to register a dog or cat at the OPD. In the 2 PM to 8 PM emergency slot it charges Rs 300, while a cow or buffalo is registered for Rs 10 in either slot.
BASU is one of the few hospitals in our table that publishes a full fee list. A dog spay (C.S. or O.H.) costs Rs 2,500 there, castration Rs 1,500 and an X-ray Rs 400. Indoor care for a dog or cat is Rs 200 a day.

Fees at other public hospitals differ and most do not publish them. Take cash and ask for the fee at the registration counter, since the emergency slot can cost more than the day OPD.
What should I do if my dog has an emergency at night in India?
Call before you drive. Only 4 of the 10 public vet hospitals we checked confirm round-the-clock emergency care, all of them college hospitals in Chennai, Namakkal, Bareilly and Bikaner. Ask whether a vet is on site, not just a guard or a helpline.
Know which cases cannot wait for morning. Heatstroke kills fast, and our dog heatstroke statistics and summer heatstroke guide explain the signs. A rectal temperature well above the normal range in our dog temperature and heart rate chart is a reason to go now.
Poisoning is another reason to go at once. Check the dog food toxicity chart and the pages on chocolate and grapes, and take the wrapper with you.

- Save two numbers now: the nearest 24-hour hospital in the table, and a private clinic with confirmed night hours.
- Keep a towel, a leash, a muzzle or cloth strip, and any medicine or wrapper your dog swallowed ready to carry.
- Tick fever cases tend to rise in the hot pre-monsoon months; see our parvo and tick fever report and monsoon dog care guide.
- Keep vaccinations current; our vaccination cost report lists prices by city.
Hours on official pages can lag behind what happens at the gate. If you find a public vet hospital in your city open at night, or one in this list closed, tell us and we will check and update the table.

Methodology and limitations
We listed government and veterinary college teaching hospitals in Indian cities with large pet populations and searched each one's official website or its university's site for published hours. Pages were read on 16 and 17 October 2026.
A hospital is marked as 24-hour only when its official page says emergency service runs round the clock, 24 hours or 24/7. A page also qualifies if it gives OPD and emergency hours covering all 24 hours. A page that lists a 24-hour service with no night details, where other university pages point to a doctor on call, is marked not confirmed. Directory, booking and review sites were not used to decide night cover.
The IVRI Izatnagar page did not load for the writer, who used the Internet Archive copy of 15 January 2026. On 18 October 2026 the live page loaded for our fact-check and states the same 24/7 emergency service.
Case counts are the minimum figures each hospital states. Phone numbers appear only where the official page shows them; some are university or registration lines rather than an emergency desk.
The closing-time chart uses the latest weekday hour at which each hospital's published hours say a pet can be seen, with 24 used for round-the-clock service.
Delhi network figures come from the Development Department's 2025-26 write-up, and fees from the BASU fee list. Both were read on 18 October 2026.
