Frequently asked questions

How many dog bite cases were there in India in 2024?
IDSP recorded 37,15,713 dog bite cases in 2024, as given in Lok Sabha Question 4870 in April 2025. A July 2025 Lok Sabha reply gave a slightly higher 37,17,336.
Which state has the most stray dogs in India?
Uttar Pradesh had the most in 2019, with 20,59,261 stray dogs. Odisha was second with 17,34,399.
Which state has the most dog bites in India?
Maharashtra reported 4,85,345 dog bites in 2024, the most of any state. Tamil Nadu was a close second with 4,80,427.
How many people die of rabies in India every year?
IDSP recorded 54 suspected rabies deaths in 2024, and a separate IHIP count logged 180 presumptive deaths. The two are different reporting systems run by the health ministry, so their totals do not match. An ICMR survey published in 2025 estimates about 5,726 deaths a year, because most deaths are never reported.
Is it legal to feed stray dogs in India?
Yes, at designated feeding spots fixed under Rule 20 of the ABC Rules, 2023. Since August 2025 the Supreme Court has barred feeding on open streets, and some cities fine violators, such as Rs 5,000 in Mira-Bhayandar.
How much compensation is paid for a dog bite in India?
It depends on the state. Greater Bengaluru pays Rs 5 lakh for a death and Rs 5,000 for an injury, while the Punjab and Haryana High Court set at least Rs 10,000 per tooth mark.
What did the Supreme Court say about stray dogs in 2026?
In its judgment of 19 May 2026 the Supreme Court found ABC centres grossly insufficient. It turned down challenges to its 7 November 2025 directions on dogs in schools, hospitals and stations. States had to file compliance affidavits in their High Courts by 7 August 2026.
Methodology and limitations
This hub compiles statistics published between 2010 and October 2026, most from 2024 to 2026. Every bullet links the page that holds the number, and each figure was matched against that page on 15 to 16 October 2026 and checked again on 17 October 2026. Compiled 16 October 2026.
We cite the original publisher first: Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha replies, PIB releases, DAHD and AWBI documents, court orders, state health data and peer-reviewed papers. DAHD moved to a new website in 2026 and its old file links no longer open. We cite the Lok Sabha copy on sansad.in or an Internet Archive copy instead.
Where a figure exists only in a news report, such as a municipal survey or a state minister's reply, the bullet names the outlet ("as reported by", or "PTI via"). Company and advocacy estimates, such as the Mars Petcare index, are labelled as estimates. We dropped any figure whose page we could not open or whose number we could not find on it.
State totals for 2019 were summed by dogeats.in from the 710 district rows of the DAHD file. Day counts in the court timeline chart are our calculation from order dates. We update this hub monthly.
