Can Dogs Eat Shorshe Ilish? Benefits, Risks & Indian Serving Tips
4 min read · Updated August 2026
Shorshe ilish is unsuitable for dogs, beyond the mustard paste's pungency and the oil-heavy gravy, hilsa itself is an extremely bony fish, adding a choking risk on top of the seasoning.
Why Shorshe Ilish Is Caution for Dogs
Shorshe Ilish is a Bengali dish of hilsa fish cooked in a pungent mustard-seed paste gravy.
Mustard paste is sharp and can irritate a dog's mouth and stomach, the gravy is typically finished with mustard oil and green chilli, and hilsa has an unusually high number of fine bones even by fish standards, none of this makes for a safe dish to share.
